Career

John began practising as an Advocate in the Maltese Courts of Justice soon after he graduated in 2006. During this period he gained extensive experience in civil and commercial litigation and was deeply involved in matters related to shipping, family, public procurement, property, real estate and succession and inheritance law. 

John was appointed Secretary to the Malta Resources Authority, between 2004, a position he relinquished in 2013. This experience has contributed towards his knowledge on matters relating to oil exploration, the environment, energy and climate change. John also sat on the board of directors of a major telecommunications company.

John is well-versed in the area of property law which spreads across a wide range of issues such as leases, property conveyance, planning permits as well as contractual rights and obligations.

He has advised major government and private agencies on matters relating to business promotion, foreign direct investment, public procurement and more.

Additionally, John has also acted as an examiner at the Faculty of Laws of the University of Malta.

Education

Dr John Bonello graduated as Bachelor of Arts in Legal and Humanistic Studies from the University of Malta in 2002, having European Studies as a secondary area. John was then awarded a Diploma as Notary Public by the same University in 2003. 

In 2004, John obtained a Certificate in trust Law and Administration by the
Institute of Financial Services Practitioners. 

John graduated as Doctor of Laws in 2005 from the University of Malta, after successfully submitting his these entitled “Public Procurement in Malta – A Critical Analysis”.

Also
in 2005, John obtained his Masters in International Maritime Law from the IMO International Maritime Law Institute (IMLI) after successfully submitting his dissertation entitled “Admiralty Jurisdiction in Malta” as well as a proposal for the implementation of The 1952 Arrest Convention into Maltese law.

John was admitted to the bar in 2006.
