Questions and concerns can arise for even the most experienced users of the Sponsor Management System (SMS), so we've compiled some helpful tips for Tier 2 sponsors:

Calculating and entering gross salary

We remind all Tier 2 sponsors that if a sponsored migrant's salary or allowances are reduced at any time from that stated on the Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) (other than in certain exceptional circumstances), a change of employment application is likely to be required. For this reason, the UK Border Agency (UKBA) recommends that in cases where allowances might fluctuate (for example, due to a change in the value of accommodation), the sponsor should take this into consideration and provide an estimated figure more likely to go up, than down, when assigning the CoS.

Making changes to a restricted Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) before issuing it to a migrant

As a sponsor, the information you provide to the UKBA when requesting a restricted CoS for a worker will automatically transfer to the restricted CoS and many of the fields will therefore be populated on the CoS when you receive it.  You can, however, indicate changes to certain details by making a note in the ‘sponsor notes' section prior to issuing the CoS to the migrant.  More information on this can be found in the UKBA's guidance on using the SMS. To view the guidance, please click here.

Sponsor profile on the SMS

Sponsors are reminded to check their sponsor profile on the UKBA's SMS regularly to ensure that all the information held is  correct. Changes of address or changes in key personnel, need to be reported to the UKBA within certain timeframes via the SMS. Failure to do so may result in a breach of sponsor obligations.
