Enhanced US Coverage Framework for the 2027 Rankings
Introducing US Elite, expanded State coverage, and clearer eligibility guidelines across the US legal market
Legal 500 is pleased to announce an enhanced US coverage framework, launching with the 2027 rankings and beyond, designed to bring greater clarity, consistency, and transparency to how law firms are researched, assessed, and recognised across the US legal market.
These updates reflect the continued evolution of the legal profession – including firm growth, consolidation, and increasing specialisation – and reinforce Legal 500’s commitment to benchmarking firms against the most appropriate peer groups, based on size, geographic reach, and market focus.
The refined structure introduces clearer eligibility guidelines, enhanced differentiation across coverage levels, and expanded recognition opportunities, while preserving the rigorous research standards for which Legal 500 is known.
Legal 500 US Rankings Categories Explained
From 2027 onward, Legal 500’s core US firm coverage will be organised across three distinct levels:
Nationwide
State
US Elite
Firms will broadly be eligible for one or two coverage levels only, and no firm will be recognised simultaneously in US Elite, State, and Nationwide rankings.
Placement is determined by firm size, geographic reach, and nature of practice and client base.
As firms grow, expand, or increase geographic reach, recognition may evolve accordingly.
National
Nationwide coverage continues to recognise firms and practitioners operating at the highest level of the US legal market, with reach and reputation extending across multiple states.
Eligibility
- Firms with a demonstrable national footprint
- Includes large US and international firms competing on complex, cross-border or multi-state mandates
- No formal size minimum, but firms must clearly operate beyond a single city or state.
Research approach
- Established nationwide methodology, unchanged in structure
- Focused on market leadership, breadth of mandates, and sustained national influence.
State
The State category is designed to showcase mid-market firms with meaningful strength, visibility, and activity across a single US state.
Eligibility
- Typically, 50–150 attorneys, with some flexibility to reflect elite lateral growth
- Am Law 100 firms are excluded
- Firms with a clear statewide footprint, often across multiple offices or practice hubs
2027 State Coverage
For the 2027 Legal 500’s State rankings, we will cover the following jurisdictions:
- New York
- California
- Massachusetts
- Florida
- Illinois
- Texas
Additional states may be introduced in future editions as coverage continues to expand.
Research approach
- Firm-led submissions
- Tiered individual rankings, informed by submissions, referee feedback, and market insight
- Core practice areas include:
- Mergers & Acquisitions
- Commercial Litigation
- White Collar Crime & Investigations
- Real Estate Intellectual Property
- Sub-tables may be introduced where depth of market activity supports additional granularity
- This category highlights firms that combine scale, sophistication, and consistent performance at the state level.
US Elite
US Elite recognises outstanding boutique, specialist, and small full-service firms whose reputations are closely tied to a particular city or, in some jurisdictions, a state where statewide coverage is not currently offered.
This approach reflects the structural diversity of the US legal market and ensures firms are assessed in the most relevant competitive context.
Eligibility
Typically, up to 50 attorneys
- Includes:
- Specialist boutiques with deep practice or sector focus
- Small full-service firms delivering breadth alongside exceptional partner-level service
- Am Law 200 firms are not eligible
- Eligibility may be:
- City-based, where statewide rankings are in place, or
- State-based, where statewide coverage is not currently offered
Research approach
Individual-led research
- Untiered firm rankings informed by lawyer tables
- Emphasis on partner involvement, quality of work, client relationships, and strong local or regional reputation
Firm progression
Firms currently recognized in US Elite that grow beyond 50 attorneys or expand their geographic footprint will be assessed for inclusion in State or Nationwide coverage, where appropriate. Movement out of US Elite should be viewed as a marker of progression, reflecting firm development rather than a loss of recognition.
Supporting Clearer Market Positioning
To maintain clarity, credibility, and fairness:
- Firms will broadly appear in one or two coverage levels only
- No firm will be ranked simultaneously in US Elite, State, and Nationwide
- This avoids overlap, prevents dilution of recognition, and ensures firms are compared against appropriate competitors
Legal 500’s goal is to present a clear market narrative at each level – city-based, state-based, or national – without conflating fundamentally different firm profiles.
