Our firm brought two EUR multi-million claims (totalling EUR 500 million) before the Court of Justice of the European Union on behalf of both natural and legal persons for damages suffered thereby as a result of the imposition, on the Republic of Cyprus, of the 2013 “bail-in” measures by the European Union Institutions. We further proceeded with an application on behalf of a number of the above clients before the European Court of Human Rights against the Republic of Cyprus.

We represented world leading automotive company Daimler AG (Mercedes-Benz Group AG) in an anti-trust investigation of the national competition authority against the company and its Cyprus distributor, in relation to foreclosure in the market for spare parts.

We were successful in obtaining the issuing of a pan-European interim injunction in a case of infringement of European Trade Marks (EUTMs) for the first time by a court in the Republic of Cyprus, prohibiting a competitor of our client, Wargaming Group Limited, from using anywhere within the European Union, in relation to the specific products covered by our clients’ EUTM registrations, signs that are identical with and/or confusingly similar to their EUTMs.

Team Services

Our specialised team deals with a wide range of EU and domestic competition law and anti-cartel matters.

In recent years, competition disputes have increased significantly and in Europe especially, record breaking fines imposed by the European Commission and national competition authorities are one reason for the surge in appeals against infringement decisions.

Competition matters feature in many corporate and commercial transactions, and our lawyers have unmatched skills and experience in giving practical, commercial advice on complex national and European competition law matters. They have guided clients through important transactions, including the facilitation of significant mergers and acquisitions, and boast a strong record of success in numerous merger reviews.

Our track record of advising on complex, high-value and sensitive competition cases is extensive, and we have worked for numerous prominent clients, considered industry leaders, across various key industry sectors: financial services; energy; infrastructure, mining and commodities; transport; and technology and innovation.

Our firm’s experienced competition team advises our clients, primarily for ensuring that any proposed agreements (whether of a horizontal or vertical nature) or practices will not be deemed anti-competitive by the Commission for the Protection of Competition Law in Cyprus. Our aim is to enable clients to achieve their strategic commercial goals.

Our competition practice is also widely acknowledged for its leading expertise in matters of competition litigation. We have successfully represented clients before the Cyprus Competition Commission on various occasions; presenting before the said Commission arguments, in support of various transactions that our firm notified to the same, and in rebuttal of allegations made against clients for anti-competitive agreements or concerted practices.

Our firm’s significant experience in European Union Law stems not only from our involvement in the process of harmonizing Cyprus laws with the acquis communautaire, by drafting several pieces of national legislation, introduced in preparation of Cyprus accession to the EU but is also founded in the qualifications and expertise gained by our legal practitioners who have graduated from top European universities and many of whom have worked in EU General Directorates.

Our EU law practice lawyers have an in-depth understanding of EU institutions and policies and combine extensive experience in both the private and public sector, advising companies, industry associations and governmental bodies. They assist clients with achieving their business objectives, offering representation across the main regulatory fields governed by EU law, including competition, trade, environment, free movement of goods and services, consumer protection, privacy and data protection. Our lawyers also possess considerable regulatory experience in specific regulated industries such as financial services, cosmetics, chemicals, technology, e-commerce and telecommunications.

We advise on European business grant schemes, European Territorial Cooperation Programmes, EU funding programmes and the submission of proposals related to research and innovation.

Our firm also regularly advises significant international investment institutions, who are key players in the world’s investment market, on the provision of investment services according to the Directive of the European Union on Markets in Financial Instruments Directive (I) and (II) (MIFID). Such advice relates to matters of cross-border nature, financial instruments and reverse solicitation. We also frequently advise Cyprus investment firms on managing alternative investment firms, as well as advising on the expansion of Cyprus investment firms to alternative investment firms.
