Rede Chambers is a client focused set, supported by experienced practice managers, driven by a strategic agenda, with strong talent at its core. Many members are leaders in commercial litigation and dispute resolution and advise on and appear in complex, high value disputes in the Hong Kong courts, in overseas courts, in regulatory tribunals, and in commercial domestic and international arbitrations.
As would be expected from a top-flight commercial set, our matters are high-value and complex. They invariably intersect with a number of other practice areas such as Intellectual Property, Construction and Regulatory. For example, the crossover of our commercial practice with our regulatory practice sees our members act against top ranked peers in Securities & Futures Commission HK v Andrew Liu & 10 others, an ongoing action involving the SFCHK suing the former directors of a listed company in relation to an acquisition and subsequent disposal of the shares of a company related to one of the directors. Similarly, members act in Chen Wencan v Secretary for Justice and Anr, a judicial review application brought by the clients of securities accounts over which restriction notices had been issued against the Hong Kong securities regulator.
Our members appear in all courts, including the Court of Appeal. Notable matters this year have included the high-profile Lo Kai Shui v HSBC International Trustee Limited & others, a successful appeal arising from complicated commercial disputes between a well-known family and HSBC International Trustee Ltd. Members also act in the malfeasance proceedings in China Forestry Holdings Limited (in official liquidation) v Top Wisdom Overseas Holdings Limited & Li Han Chun. Awaiting permission to appeal, Poon Ka Man Jason v Cheng Wai Tao & Ors is a landmark case on whether a defendant company in a derivative action can accept a sanctioned payment made by a defendant wrongdoer pursuant to O22 of the Rules of the High Court.
Our matters are often of ultra-high value. For example, our members act for the Secretary for Justice in The Secretary for Justice v Wong Tak Wai and Jong Yat Kit, long-running proceedings concerning the charitable objects of the trust established by the will of the late Mrs Nina Wang, worth over HK$141 billion. We also represent UHNW individuals.
