Career

Sally is a private equity specialist and advises on all aspects of merger and acquisition transactions (both public and private) for private equity funds, including structuring advice, the consortium and shareholders arrangements, the management participation arrangements, Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) structures, funding arrangements and reorganisations. She has acted in most of South Africa’s highest profile private equity transactions over the past 20 years. Her expertise has been recognised by various international research organisations including Chambers Global, Legal 500, IFLR1000, Who’s Who Legal and Best Lawyers (where she was named “Lawyer of the Year” for Private Equity in 2010, 2018 and 2023). She was honoured with the “Woman Professional of the Year” award at the 2016 South African Professional Services Awards and received two awards at the 2018 South African Professional Services Awards, namely “Professional of the Year – Law Class” and the highly coveted “South African Professional of the Year – Overall Winner”. In 2024, Sally received the “IFLR Women DealMakers Hall of Fame award”, which highlights her significant impact on the legal landscape and the work she has done to actively promote women in law, and in 2025, Sally Hutton was named “Individual DealMaker of the Year” at the 2024 DealMakers Awards.
