Career
Gary Thompson served for many years as co-chair of the firm’s M&A practice group. His representative clients have included companies in the consumer products, technology, defense and energy sectors. He has over 30 years’ experience advising corporate clients in connection with domestic and cross-border mergers, acquisitions, divestitures, joint ventures, strategic partnerships, carve-out transactions, minority investments and governance matters. The Best Lawyers in America has named him an Eminent Practitioner since 2021, and has recognized him in the areas of corporate and M&A law since 2005; that publication also recognized him as Lawyer of the Year for M&A Law, Virginia (2019 and 2024) and Lawyer of the Year for Corporate Law in Richmond, Virginia (2021) . Gary was named among the Top 50 North Americas M&A lawyers for 2022, 2014 and 2013, and as the 2012 M&A Lawyer of the Year – Americas Middle Markets, by the Global M&A Network; he has led deal teams that were awarded twelve M&A Atlas Awards for domestic and cross-border transactions.
