John’s corporate practice focuses primarily on private equity investments and mergers and acquisitions. He is experienced in advising clients in making energy investments in the upstream and midstream sectors.

John represents some of the leading private equity and energy companies in the world, including Apollo Global Management, Pioneer Natural Resources, Oaktree Capital Management and TPG Capital. He has worked on a wide array of transactions in the energy sector, including upstream and midstream joint ventures, upstream and midstream acquisitions and divestitures, and investments in oil services and mining companies.

Vinson & Elkins LLP advises leading private equity sponsors on complex, high-value transactions across key sectors, with a standout focus on energy and renewables. Houston’s Sarah Morgan chairs the practice and continues to handle a range of high-value transactions, from capital raises to large-scale leveraged buyouts and spin-offs. Co-head John Grand’s Dallas-based practice is concentrated in the energy sector, particularly in the upstream and midstream, while co-head Jim Fox, who has a similarly energy-focused practice, also covers investments and disposals in transport and industrials from the New York office. Also acting out of New York, Dan Komarek leverages his capabilities in M&A to advise on a host of sponsor-side and portfolio company mandates. Co-head Matthew Strock, an M&A and private equity specialist based in Houston, is renowned for his extensive oil and gas work, covering upstream, midstream, oilfield services, and manufacturing. Co-head Danielle Patterson, also based in Houston, advises a broad range of clients on energy-transition matters, including M&A, joint ventures, and project development. Michael Joyce, based in Denver, focuses on energy and infrastructure finance, while co-head John Grand, based in Dallas, concentrates on M&A and equity investments in the upstream and midstream sectors. Houston’s Douglas Bland is particularly active in the midstream, managing joint ventures, investments, and development issues. Lande Spottswood and Bryan Loocke, both in Houston, handle complex M&A for both public and private companies, while Keith Fullenweider, also in Houston, primarily advises private equity firms.
