Bill is a commercial lawyer with many years’ experience of advising on both contentious and non-contentious intellectual property and information technology matters. He is also a Chartered Trade Mark Attorney.

He regularly presents talks to entrepreneurs and business people on protecting and exploiting brands, technology and other innovations.

Bill advises a very wide range of clients, including PLCs, SMEs, start-ups and inventors, on all aspects of commercial law.

He has particular expertise in relation to the development and exploitation of new technologies, trade mark law and information technology.

Bill has worked with many businesses to help them develop, protect and successfully exploit new technologies.

This has included providing strategic advice on protecting and exploiting new products; drafting and negotiating research and development agreements and intellectual property licensing agreements and advising technology-focused businesses on joint ventures and corporate transactions.

Bill combines in-depth knowledge of the law on patents, trade marks, designs, copyright and confidential information with the ability to explain complex concepts accessibly.

He has a wealth of experience advising brand owners on trade mark law and regularly files and prosecutes trade mark applications in the UK, Europe and internationally for clients.

Working with a number of well known brands, he frequently advises on disputes concerning the ownership, validity and infringement of trade marks.

Bill advises software developers, software resellers and purchasers of IT systems and services on licensing and implementation projects. This has included a number of high value projects involving business-critical IT systems.

Bill has completed a number of secondments with clients including a major retailer and a large software supplier. This has given him a keen understanding of the commercial pressures his clients face every day.

Ward Hadaway LLP is active in contentious and non-contentious work, especially regarding trade marks, spanning opposition, invalidity and infringement mandates. The practice has experience working with universities and spin-out companies from the university sector, and a growing number of clients from the life sciences, pharmaceutical and medical devices sector. The department is jointly led by Judy Baker and Bill Goodwin, who is a dual-qualified solicitor and chartered trade mark attorney and regularly advises on new technologies, trade mark law and IT issues. Associate Sally Sanderson is a core member of the team, and Sonia Burgess, director and chartered trade mark attorney, joined the department in August 2023.
