Career

Richard is a member of the Betting and Gaming Team and advises clients on various aspects of licensing law including Operating, Personal and Premises licences and has assisted in the development of bespoke compliance regimes for operators under the Gambling Act 2005.

Richard acts for a range of leisure operators from single premise owners to multinational corporations that provide land-based and online betting and gaming services. Richard provides assistance to clients such as bookmakers, bingo operators, family entertainment centre and adult gaming centre arcades, clubs and gaming machine manufacturers and suppliers.

Richard advisors commercial and non-commercial clubs under both licensing and gambling regimes.

He also provides BII accredited training and bespoke training for  compliance under the Gambling Act 2005, presents at regional Institute of Licensing events and provides gambling training to its members.

Richard also advises clients on matters relating to permissions and applications under the Licensing Act 2003 and has prepared cases for hearings and appeals.

Richard holds the National Certificate for Licensing Practitioners (Gambling) and the National Certificate for Licensing Practitioners.

Education

Before entering the legal profession, Richard obtained a PhD in Oncology from Nottingham University in 2006.

In 2010 he gained his LLB and Legal Practice Certificate from Nottingham Law School.

Richard returned to Poppleston Allen in June 2013, having previously worked with us in 2010 as a paralegal following completion of the Legal Practice course at Nottingham Law School. During the intervening period Richard completed his training contract and qualified as a solicitor in early 2015, gaining valuable experience in litigation, private client services and professional ethics.
