Career
As a partner in our Dispute Resolution team, Richard focuses on high-value and complex litigation, often originating in former Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) countries, in particular Russia, Ukraine, and Kazakhstan. He has in-depth experience in cross-border litigation and fraud, including particular worldwide freezing injunctions and other powerful asset preservation relief.
Richard has acted on some of the most high-profile disputes to come before the English courts in recent years, including acting for the Kazakh bank, Bank TuranAlem, on the groundbreaking dispute against its former chairman, Mukhtar Ablyazov, who was found to have misappropriated assets worth billions of dollars. He also led the team in a related action that recently came before the UK Supreme Court in what has become one of the leading cases on the tort of unlawful means conspiracy. He is currently acting for the largest bank in Ukraine, PrivatBank, in another high-profile claim against the bank’s former shareholders and officers, who are alleged to have defrauded the bank of sums running to US$2.6 billion. Richard also acts for Kazakhstan Kagazy in its US$300 million fraud claim against its former directors, on which he was instructed in place of Allen & Overy last year in recognition of his market-leading expertise in complex, cross-border enforcement matters.
Whilst having acted on significant disputes in a wide range of fields, Richard has particular experience in the fields of banking and mining, having also acted for the Kazakh mining conglomerate, Eurasian Natural Resources Corp., in a dispute concerning a major iron ore project in Brazil. Richard is known for being hard-working, determined, tenacious, and highly commercial and comes recommended for CIS-related disputes in particular.
