Webber Wentzel is ‘one of the leaders’ in both private equity and infrastructure funds, representing many of the major general partners in South Africa, southern, and east Africa. The firm has advised on a series of listings for private equity funds, including that of African Rainbow Capital Investments on the JSE. The team, led by Nicole Paige, who is ‘knowledgeable’ and has a ‘great work ethic’, and tax specialist Brian Dennehy, provides an ‘excellent’ service.

Bowmans is noted for private equity funds, collective investment schemes and hedge funds in sub-Saharan Africa. It recently advised a real estate development company on the creation of a permanent capital vehicle for an African real estate development. John Bellew is hugely experienced and Wally Horak provides key tax expertise.

ENSafrica has an impressive asset manager and institutional investor client base and is ‘strong in the regulated environment’ with ‘excellent industry knowledge’. It is recommended for hedge funds and collective investment schemes. Energy, infrastructure and real estate funds are growth areas. Johan Loubser has ‘excellent industry knowledge and an ability to understand business issues’ and Roger Rudolph has extensive client relationships.

Norton Rose Fulbright South Africa Inc has an impressive market share of the South African hedge fund manager market and is active in both the energy and infrastructure private equity fund space and BEE private equity funds segment. Clients include Ascent Capital, Grindrod Asset Management and Absa. Shawn Barnett leads the team after John Gillmer’s departure to Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr.

Werksmans Attorneys’ ‘extremely knowledgeable’ team has broad product and geographic coverage. It recently advised five pension/provident funds and a Namibian-based institutional investor on their proposed investment into three private equity funds. Shayne Krige is ‘investor friendly’ and ‘provides extremely good advice’.
