Castrén & Snellman represents Valio in follow-on damage claims of over €100m relating to predatory pricing. Anna Kuusniemi-Laine advised several private ambulance firms on a state aid complaint. Practice head Sari Hiltunen is highly regarded, and newly elected partner Jussi Nieminen is considered ‘an up and coming competition lawyer and merger control adviser’.

The ‘very broad competition law practice’ at Dittmar & Indrenius represents several cities and municipalities in the asphalt cartel follow-on damages claims valued at €100m. Practice head Ilkka Leppihalme and senior attorney Toni Kalliokoski are defending Örum in damages litigation relating to a spare car parts cartel. ‘Dynamic lawyer’ Leppihalme has ‘a strong track record in competition litigation’ and senior associate Heidi Muukkonen is a key contact for merger control.

Hannes Snellman is experienced in merger control matters and acted for Terveystalo on its acquisition of Diacor and assisted Telia with its joint venture with DNA. The practice also represents UPM-Kymmene in private enforcement actions following the ruling in the Roundwood cartel case. Practice head Mikael Wahlbeck and Tapani Manninen are key contacts. Mikko Huimala was a new arrival from DLA Piper in November 2017.

Roschier’s practice offers ‘to the point expertise’, particularly in cross-border matters. It was instructed by YIT Corporation on its combination with Lemminkäinen, which required multi-jurisdictional merger notification work. Practice heads Christian Wik and Niko Hukkinen represented Arla in abuse of dominant position proceedings and also assisted with a €58m follow-on damages claim.

Borenius’ competition practice offers ‘good value for money’ and ‘flexible service’. It defended NCC Industry and Interasfaltti in asphalt cartel follow-on damages claims. ‘Excellent and pragmatic’ practice head Ilkka Aalto-Setälä is advising the Finnish Real Estate Management Federation in the FCCA’s investigation into alleged anti-competitive measures.

The ‘excellent’ competition law practice at DLA Piper has extensive experience in merger control matters. The practice represents Kesko Corporation and Yleisradio. Jukka Luostarinen is recommended for his ‘excellent practical judgement’. Mikko Huimala joined Hannes Snellman in November 2017.

The ‘responsive and pragmatic’ team at HPP Attorneys provides ‘cost-efficient expertise’. It is defending Metsä Group in cartel damages claims with an aggregate value of €300m. Clients also include Posti Group, Finavia and the Ownership Steering Department of the Prime Minister’s Office.

Krogerus’ competition practice is defending Pohjolan Matka group against a €38m fine for alleged cartel activity in the bus transport market. It also has experience in state aid and merger control matters. Katri Joenpolvi and Leena Lindberg head the practice which represents Danske Bank, OP Financial Group and Orion.

Merilampi Attorneys Ltd handled the merger control filings in relation to Kesko Corporation’s acquisition of Onninen. It also defended Skanska Asphalt in €56.7m cartel damages claims. Following Arttu Mentula’s departure to form Mentula & Väätäinen Attorneys Ltd, Erkko Ruohoniemi is head of the practice which includes newly made-up partner Satu-Anneli Kauranen.

With ‘in-depth knowledge of all the intricacies of competition law’, Avance Attorneys Ltd defended P&C Insurance Company in abuse of dominant position proceedings and also advised on Adelis Equity Partners’ acquisition of Quattro Mikenti Group. Practice head Mikko Alkioprovides targeted and impactful advice’.

Bird & Bird’s EU and competition law practice is experienced in merger control matters as well as antitrust and regulatory regimes. Katia Duncker heads the team, which includes new hire senior associate Päivi Tammilehto, who joined from the Finnish Competition Authority.

Eversheds Asianajotoimisto Oy / Eversheds Attorneys Ltd (a member of Eversheds Sutherland)’s practice is ‘quick, reliable, flexible’ and ‘good value for money’. It acted for nine municipalities in €40m asphalt cartel follow-on damages claims. Olli Hyvönen and Marko Mononen head the team, which includes state aid specialist Kalervo Rötsä.

Procopé & Hornborg represents clients in merger control matters and antitrust disputes as well as in state aid and public procurement. It also handled claims relating to asphalt cartel litigation. Lotta Uusitalo heads the practice, which includes Asta Siponen.

Waselius & Wist successfully represented Bayer and others in litigation relating to discriminatory public procurement against KL-Kuntahankinnat (as the contracting authority) and OneMed (as the successful tenderer.) Practice head Lotta Pohjanpalo is a key contact.

Lexia Attorneys Ltd’s practice, headed by counsel Mika Oinonen, advised Woikoski on public procurement litigation for the alleged unlawful termination of an agreement by the Hospital District of South Ostrobothnia.

Aimo Halonen is head of the competition practice at Mäkitalo Rantanen & Co Ltd, which represents 655 private forest owners in €30m-worth of forestry cartel claims. It also advised South Karelia Social and Health Care District on its hospital construction procurement process.
