Allen & Overy LLP represents sellers and buyers in real estate transactions, as well as assisting banks with real estate finance. The team advised Blackstone on the acquisition of a portfolio of warehouses from Standard Life. Other clients include Patrizia Immobilien and Aareal Bank. Department head Daniel Gillet is recommended along with senior associate Sébastien de Callatay, who gives ‘excellent advice’.

Baker & McKenzie CVBA/SCRL focuses on real estate transactions. The core multinational client base has been increasingly expanded by local real estate investors, developers and financial institutions. The group handled the acquisition of the Schuman 6 property for Deka Immobilien. Practice head Dominique Lechien and Rudy Dupont are recommended.

Handling integrated corporate real estate, real estate finance and tax work, Clifford Chancecomes up with creative solutions for complex problems’. ‘Proactive’ practice head Henri d’Ursel assisted football club RSC Anderlecht with the development of a new stadium. Pieter De Bock is also recommended. Thierry Blockerye retired from the partnership, joining THB Avocat.

Liedekerke Wolters Waelbroeck Kirkpatrick’s ‘excellent’ real estate and regulatory department recently advised KBC Insurance on buying parts of Sunparks Ardennen holiday park. Practice head Yves Delacroix has ‘outstanding negotiation skills’; Alexandre Emond is ‘reliable, pragmatic and composed’; and senior attorney Julie De Bonnet is another notable figure.

Linklaters handles mandates across a wide range of areas, including real estate M&A, financing, taxation, capital markets derivatives, and real estate disputes. The team advised Whitewood Capital and DW Partners on the acquisition of Brouckere Tower Invest. Practice head Yves Moreau has ‘outstanding legal skills’. The ‘pragmatic’ Pieter Puelinckx and counsel France Englebert are also recommended.

Stibbe handles high-end real estate transactions, as well as some of Belgium’s major construction and infrastructure projects; it has specialist expertise in senior housing. The client roster includes project developers, public authorities, banks, private PPP sponsors and investors. The firm has been involved in Project Neo, the urban regeneration of Heysel in northern Brussels. Rony Vermeersch and Rudy Nauwelaerts are practice co-heads.

DLA Piper’s ‘very proactive’ lawyers recently assisted KBC Real Estate with the public offering and Euronext Brussels listing of 28,500 real estate certificates issued by Immo Mechelen City Center. Loyens & Loeff provides ‘practical advice’ across all areas of real estate. The firm assisted investor Fubon Life Insurance with the acquisition of the Ellipse building in Brussels. Christophe Laurent heads the practice, in which France Vlassembrouck and recently promoted partner Ariane Brohez are other names to note.

Lydian’s ‘top-notch’ real estate team of ‘highly qualified lawyers’ assisted Nike with the building of a new centre at its European distribution headquarters in Laakdal. The City of Brussels is another client. Practice head Wouter Neven is a ‘a good communicator’, who ‘leverages his relationships in the industry’.

NautaDutilh handles real estate transactions and mandates related to infrastructure projects, PPPs and real estate developments. The firm advised a consortium led by Macquarie on a PPP for the construction of a new prison complex in Haren. Didier De Vliegher and François Tulkens jointly head the group. Gerald Van Walle joined K Law.

Altius’ real estate and regulatory team assisted biotech company Biovest with the legal aspects of establishing an office and laboratory facilities in the ‘Bio-incubator’ business centre in Ghent. Active clients include AG Real Estate and Corinthia Hotels. Lieven Peeters heads the department.

Clients appreciate the ‘accuracy and speed’ of advice provided by CMS, which acted for Unibail-Rodamco on all tax aspects of Project Neo, a planned mixed-use urban regeneration project in Brussels. Practice head Bruno Duquesne is a property finance expert and Pierre-Axel Chabot is also recommended.

Cresco Advocaten’s ‘highly qualified and diverse team’ has expert knowledge of the hotel sector and green energy projects. Martin’s Hotels was assisted with the takeover of several luxury hotels. The ‘no-nonsenseFilip De Schouwer and Tessa Gijbels are recommended.

Eubelius handles real estate transactions and tax law, as well as construction projects. The practice recently advised Aedifica, a REIT specialised in senior housing, on a €153m rights issuance on Euronext Brussels. Wim Goossens and Lars Van Bever are the key contacts.

Laga’s real estate department received a major boost with the hire of new practice head Maximilien van de Werve, who previously worked as legal counsel for a real estate developer. Considered ‘a star in the making’ with a ‘a strong reputation’, Van de Werve has broad transactional experience to complement tax expert Danny Stas and the financing experience of Werner Van Lembergen. The team assisted Extensa Group and a banking consortium with the financing of a new administrative centre at the Tour & Taxis site in Brussels.

Marx, Van Ranst, Vermeersch & Partners specialises in property transactions, with a focus on industrial and retail properties, and also handles project development, private and public construction law, as well as property finance. Stefaan Verbouwe heads the practice.

McGuireWoods LLP provides ‘well thought out’ advice on real estate transactions and disputes. Recent work includes assisting Gates Europe with the sale of various plots of land. Department head Steven Ongena and counsel Pol Cools are names to note.

Antwerp-based Schoups is ‘a high-level player’ handling private construction law, public procurement and PPPs, as well as real estate and project development. Marco Schoups heads the practice, in which Chantal De Smedt-Quintelier. Els Op de Beeck, Siegfried Busscher and Kris Lemmens are also recommended.

Simont Braun’s real estate department focuses on regulatory and tax advice, as well as finance-related litigation. Clients include real estate developers, public bodies, private equity firms and investors, among them Eurovia and the City of Brussels. Manuela von Kuegelgen heads the group.

Ashurst LLP provides ‘fast and focused’ advice to a diverse client base. The practice is particularly strong in real estate finance, where it advised private equity firm Apollo as borrower on a recap of a credit agreement following its acquisition of a hotel portfolio. ‘Pragmatic’ practice head David Du Pont was promoted to partner. Carl Meyntjens joined Simmons & Simmons LLP.

Bird & Bird handles real estate matters for businesses in the IT, telecoms, life sciences, food and energy sectors. Clients include Ironshore and Lantmännen Unibake. Brent Springael heads the department.

Monard Law represented contractor Heijmans Belgium in a dispute regarding the construction of new prison facilities in Hasselt. Luc Linders has ‘plenty of industry knowledge’ and is co-head of the practice alongside Gregory Grouwels. Associate-partner Stefaan Van Dyck joined from Laga.
