This was rather overwhelming\u2019, last minute finance deal, submitting erroneous work to other side and having to fix it.\u2019<\/p>\n<\/p>\n                \n               \n      <h2 class=\"tab-listing\" id=\"verdict\">The Lex 100 verdict on <span class=\"highlight-firm\">Mishcon de Reya LLP<\/span><\/h2>\n       \n        \n      \n             \n        <p>    \n\t<p>Mishcon de Reya attracts trainees with its \u201cwork-life balance, good clients and diverse practice areas,\u201d alongside a \u201cstrong brand and exciting work.\u201d Many point to the firm\u2019s \u201chigh-profile litigation cases, culture and stance on innovation\u201d as major draws, while others highlight the \u201cenergetic and friendly atmosphere\u201d and the fact that the firm has \u201coffered apprenticeships.\u201d Reputation looms large too, with one recruit citing the \u201cgreat reputation, clients, culture\u201d as decisive. Compared with peers elsewhere, Mishcon is said to offer \u201cgood hours and good matters,\u201d with \u201cbetter work-life balance, nicer and more supportive culture.\u201d Trainees describe the environment as \u201cmore collegiate\u201d and \u201ca bit more relaxed, with more priority on maintaining wellbeing.\u201d That said, many acknowledge that \u201cMishcon pays less\u201d than some competitors. The work itself is praised for its variety and interest: trainees highlight the \u201cdiverse clients and practice areas,\u201d \u201cinteresting cases,\u201d and \u201clovely people to work with.\u201d The best moments range from \u201cattending court\u201d to \u201cdrafting and submitting my first contract for review,\u201d with others recalling praise from supervisors \u2014 one trainee was told they had \u201craised the bar for the next trainee to be assessed.\u201d Pro bono also features prominently, including involvement in \u201csetting up a personal injury trust.\u201d Of course, challenges exist. Salary is the most common complaint \u2014 described as \u201clower than average,\u201d with several bluntly noting simply \u201cpay.\u201d Hours can \u201cbe a bit long, but still good in comparison with competitors.\u201d Some trainees recall tougher moments, from \u201cunderestimating expectations in a litigation seat\u201d to the stress of \u201clast-minute finance deals\u201d or \u201cbeing burned out after an intensive month.\u201d Hybrid working divides opinion. While there is a \u201cgood written policy,\u201d trainees say \u201cin practice [they] seem to be expected to come into the office most days.\u201d Some teams are \u201cmore supportive than others,\u201d and \u201ctrainees are encouraged to WFH as little as possible,\u201d though one suggested the firm \u201cshould be more willing to help with home set-up.\u201d Pro bono and CSR score highly, described as \u201cvery good\u201d with \u201clots of opportunities\u201d across teams and volunteer-led groups, even if finding time can be tricky. Overall, Mishcon de Reya offers trainees a mix of \u201cinteresting clients, diverse practice areas, and a supportive culture,\u201d balanced against the trade-off of a lower salary \u2014 but one that many feel is worth it for the quality of training and the people they work with.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n        \n             \n                \n        \t\t<p>        \n              \n\n\n           \n        \n         \t\t \n\t\t <h2 id=\"ditl\">A day in the life of... Shreya Chakraborty, trainee, Mishcon de Reya LLP<\/h2>\n\t\t <p><img height=\"200\" width=\"200\" alt=\"Shreya Chakraborty, Mishcon de Reya LLP\" class=\"ditl-photo\" src=\"https:\/\/my.legal500.com\/future-lawyers\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/09\/shreya-chakraborty.jpg\"\/>\t\t <p><strong>Departments to date:<\/strong> Corporate; Employment; Family<\/p>         \n\t\t \t\t <p><strong>University: <\/strong>\n\t\t \t\t UCL\t\t \t\t <\/p>\n\t\t         \n\t\t <p><strong>Degree:<\/strong> Law<\/p>    <\/p>  \n\t\t <p><p><strong>8.30am:<\/strong>\u00a0I head into work. My commute is only around 30 minutes, so I try and come into the office four days a week. I pick up a coffee from my favourite coffee shop next to Holborn station (a pumpkin spice latte feels appropriate).<\/p>\n<p><strong>9.00am:<\/strong>\u00a0Once I\u2019ve settled into my office for the morning, I review my emails and Teams messages to check whether any urgent work has come in. I then write down my action list for the day based on emails and my calendar. I like to have a hand-written copy of my list on my desk so that I can tick off tasks as I go along.<\/p>\n<p><strong>9.30am:<\/strong>\u00a0I have a catch up with my supervisor, with whom I share an office, to check whether I can assist her with any tasks during the day. I then make a start on the first task of the morning, which is to prepare a Form H for a hearing at the RCJ that I am attending next week. In divorce and finance proceedings, each side is required to fill in a Form H to inform the court of legal costs that have been incurred and remain outstanding. This involves working through the fees incurred on our billing system and allocating them to categories on the form. While this can be a lengthy process, as a trainee, it is a good task to help develop attention to detail and gain a general overview of how the case has been run so far.<\/p>\n<p><strong>10.30am:<\/strong>\u00a0I head to the kitchen after an hour or so to take a quick break from my screen and catch up with colleagues.<\/p>\n<p><strong>10.40am:<\/strong>\u00a0I continue working on the Form H until lunch, stopping in between to reply to emails or complete ad hoc tasks. I have found that in departments where you work with private clients, you have far more matters running simultaneously, and you often dip in and out of your matters during the day. For example, today I have to pause work on the Form H to obtain translations of foreign bank statements that are needed for financial disclosure on a different divorce and finances case. I contact our designated Litigation Support Hub who are very helpful in obtaining urgent translations.<\/p>\n<p><strong>12.45pm:<\/strong>\u00a0A few of the other trainees and I head down to the canteen for lunch.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1.30pm:<\/strong>\u00a0I have an in-person new client meeting with one of the partners at 2pm. To prepare, I read through the documents that the client has provided to understand the context of the meeting.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2.00pm:<\/strong>\u00a0The partner and I head down to collect the client. As a trainee, my role in client meetings is to take a verbatim note of what is discussed, making sure I have recorded important details such as names of any children, properties or important assets. I find that client meetings are a great way to learn because the partner will be explaining legal concepts, such as how assets are split on divorce, in more basic terms to the client.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3.15pm:<\/strong>\u00a0After the meeting, I head to the lounge for a coffee with my development partner. At our firm, trainees are paired with a partner who will oversee your progression during your training contract and will be on hand to discuss your career goals. We discuss how I am enjoying my seat so far, as well as my involvement with the M: BRACE racial equality strand at the firm.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4.00pm:<\/strong>\u00a0I head back up to my office to tidy up my attendance note from the client meeting. I then check my emails and see that I have been asked to prepare an exhibit to a witness statement in child arrangement proceedings. I run through the task with the associate and then spend the afternoon locating the documents on the file management system and compiling the exhibit. Again, this is a good task to gain a general overview of a case.<\/p>\n<p><strong>6.00pm:<\/strong>\u00a0I check my emails and flag any tasks that will need to be picked up in tomorrow\u2019s action list. I then make sure I have submitted my time recording for the day before leaving the office.<\/p>\n<p><strong>6.30pm:<\/strong>\u00a0I walk over to Covent Garden to catch up with a uni friend for dinner before heading home.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n\t\t \n        \n                <h2 id=\"about\">About the firm<\/h2>\n        <p><p><strong>The firm:<\/strong> The Mishcon de Reya Group is an independent, international professional services business with law at its heart, employing over 1,450 people with over 650 lawyers.
