I was given significant responsibility on this deal, despite being a trainee\u2019, \u2018facilitating a top-of-the-market M&amp;A transaction for a big private equity client\u2019<\/p>\n<p><strong>Worst moment?<\/strong> \u2018Several 3am finishes\u2019, \u2018several all-nighters, including 3 consecutively to close a deal\u2019, \u2018leaving each seat &#8211; it&#8217;s not fun to uproot yourself and start over!\u2019, \u2018liaising with foreign counsel at 4am\u2019<\/p>\n<\/p>\n                \n               \n      <h2 class=\"tab-listing\" id=\"verdict\">The Lex 100 verdict on <span class=\"highlight-firm\">Milbank LLP<\/span><\/h2>\n       \n        \n      \n             \n        <p>    \n\t<p>Milbank attracts trainees with its \u201ctop-of-the-market finance practices combined with a friendly culture\u201d and the promise of \u201cquality of work and number of top-ranking teams, and ability to take on responsibility.\u201d The small trainee intake is a particular draw, described as fostering \u201cgreater client exposure, camaraderie and the ability to take on more responsibility.\u201d Others highlight the appeal of combining \u201cquality of work, remuneration, small intake,\u201d which makes Milbank stand out among elite US firms in London. Training is consistently described as front-loaded with responsibility. One trainee said, \u201cwe do more substantive work and take on more responsibility at an earlier stage,\u201d while another added, \u201cwe are given more responsibility and opportunities to \u2018reach up\u2019 to associate level work. It also feels like we get more client face time.\u201d This does come with trade-offs, with one candid remark that the training means \u201cmuch more responsibility but worse hours.\u201d Still, others note that \u201cthe firm is offering more and more structured training for trainees which is very encouraging.\u201d When asked about the best thing at Milbank, the responses are unequivocal: \u201cthe people and the remuneration,\u201d \u201cquality of work and opportunities to learn,\u201d and \u201cbeing exposed in-depth to top-of-the-market work.\u201d The prestige of deals plays a big role in trainees\u2019 experiences. Highlights have included \u201cworking on the biggest European private credit funded LBO\u201d, being given \u201csignificant responsibility despite being a trainee,\u201d and \u201cfacilitating a top-of-the-market M&amp;A transaction for a big private equity client.\u201d Seeing these deals \u201creported in the press\u201d is also a source of pride. But alongside this high-quality work, the long hours are the biggest downside. Trainees speak frankly of \u201cseveral 3am finishes,\u201d \u201cseveral all-nighters, including three consecutively,\u201d and \u201cliaising with foreign counsel at 4am.\u201d For some, the \u201cunpredictability of work-life balance\u201d and lack of flexibility if \u201canything gets in the way of work\u201d are real challenges. Hybrid working is described as \u201cteam specific,\u201d with some offering \u201cfull flexibility\u201d and others sticking to \u201cthe official firm policy of four days in the office for trainees.\u201d On the pro bono side, trainees highlight \u201clots of opportunities especially pro bono\u201d and a \u201cvery good\u201d level of availability across teams. First, I check my emails to see if anything has come in overnight (perhaps from clients working in different time zones) and either reply to those or complete the tasks set in them. Tasks might include updating conditions precedents checklists to help everyone working on a deal stay up-to-date with the progress of the deal and what stages the various documents are at, amending documents based on the comments received from a client or external counsel, or emailing documents onto various parties for their review.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lunch:\u202f<\/strong>Now that we have returned to the office, lunch is a great time to talk to other Milbank employees, whether this be fellow trainees, people from your team, or people from other departments in the firm.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Afternoon:<\/strong>\u202fIn the afternoon, I either continue the work from the morning or get set more work by associates in my team. Often, they call me (if we are not in the office) or come into my office to explain the task and make sure that I understand what I am doing. Everyone is very helpful. The work set includes drafting the various documents required for transactions, creating signature packs for when deals are being signed, or checking documents for missing definitions or cross-references.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Evening:<\/strong>\u202fIf you are working into the evening, you can eat at the office and complete your work. If not, the evening is yours to spend however you like! On some nights, I like to cook or go out for dinner with my friends.
