Cleary has a mixture of big and small practice areas, and this gives trainees a wide exposure to different types of work\u2019<\/p>\n<p><strong>Best thing about the firm?<\/strong> \u2018Quality of work, even as trainee; International nature of work\u2019, \u2018interesting work\u2019, \u2018the colleagues and their mindset towards the job\u2019, \u2018the work is interesting and international. I enjoy working on high-profile and fast-moving matters\u2019, \u2018the collegiate environment and mutual support among the trainee cohort\u2019, \u2018there is no &#8216;ceiling&#8217; to the type of work you can do as a trainee &#8211; lawyers are always happy for you to take a first stab at more senior work\u2019<\/p>\n<p><strong>Worst thing about the firm?<\/strong> \u2018Secondments: there is no guarantee to have one and the process is very unclear.\u00a0 There is also little visibility and transparency on the qualification process\u2019, \u2018non-market pay\u2019, \u2018the hours can be long and unforgiving. The work can occasionally be administrative in nature and therefore, less interesting. NQ pay has not increased in line with the rest of the market\u2019, \u2018very few boundaries in terms of work-life balance\u2019, the hours\u2019<\/p>\n<p><strong>Best moment?<\/strong> \u2018Supporting multiple successful signing \/ closing processes. Organising an in-person negotiation session for clients and counterparties to a transaction\u2019, \u20182-day Acculturation organised by the firm in Brussels office\u2019, \u2018working with a very senior partner and the client contact that exposed me to\u2019, \u2018attending in-person negotiations &#8211; they usually happen over e-mail or Zoom nowadays!\u2019, \u2018my first deal\u2019<\/p>\n<p><strong>Worst moment?<\/strong> \u2018Late nights with pressure during my Debt Finance seat\u2019, \u2018working long hours and weekends\u2019, \u2018working back-to-back weekends\u2019, \u2018getting poor feedback after a very intense week and weekend in the office\u2019, \u2018dealing with difficult counsel and company on a diligence task\u2019, \u2018working late at night on tasks that I struggle with\u2019<\/p>\n<\/p>\n                \n               \n      <h2 class=\"tab-listing\" id=\"verdict\">The Lex 100 verdict on <span class=\"highlight-firm\">Cleary Gottlieb Steen &amp; Hamilton<\/span><\/h2>\n       \n        \n      \n             \n        <p>    \n\t<p>Trainees at Cleary are drawn to the firm\u2019s prestigious work, international outlook, and welcoming culture. Many highlight the combination of high-quality work and approachable colleagues as a major factor in choosing the firm: \u201cI chose Cleary because of its broad practice areas and welcoming culture\u2026The people at Cleary are also friendly and people are happy to answer questions and explain the background of any task.\u201d The firm\u2019s meritocratic and multidisciplinary environment further appeals to trainees, offering exposure across diverse practice areas such as Disputes, Corporate, M&amp;A, and Private Equity.
