Along with the culture and friendliness at the firm\u2019, \u2018Bristows was the only firm I applied for; it promised an incomparable quality of work in the sciences and technology industries and a generous work life balance &#8211; as a biologist, it was a no brainer\u2019<\/p>\n<p><strong>Best thing about the firm?<\/strong> \u2018The people and the quality of work. Really interest clients\u2019, \u2018Bristows has no shortage of fascinating matters and clients and fosters a culture of collaboration and teamwork. There is no hoarding of interesting matters, and trainees are invited to work on the biggest and most interesting projects in the firm\u2019, \u2018the passion everyone has for their work, and how willing they are to discuss it and when you express an interest, they are very happy for you to get involved when the opportunity arrives\u2019<\/p>\n<p><strong>Worst thing about the firm?<\/strong> \u2018The amount of time it takes to reach senior associate and partner\u2019, \u2018the perks are not bad by comparison to other industries, but struggle to impress when held up against larger firms. Comfort perks such as use of a cafeteria, gym, or shared relaxation space are lacking\u2019, \u2018the tech is not the best\u2019, \u2018Bristows has a super friendly vibe, but sometimes it feels like senior colleagues avoid giving direct feedback\u2019<\/p>\n<p><strong>Best moment?<\/strong> \u2018Reporting directly to a client on their lease completing after working closely with them to get it across the line\u2019, \u2018attending all days of a three-week patent litigation trial within the first three months of my training contract\u2019, \u2018in a recent litigation case, I did a thorough review of the evidence provided by the other side. My findings led to new workstreams and directly shaped our client&#8217;s pleadings\u2019<\/p>\n<p><strong>Worst moment?<\/strong> \u2018How tired I was got with the early starts and late finishes in the run up\/during a 3-week trial (but I appreciate this was inevitable and would have been the case at any firm)\u2019, \u2018late nights bundling sessions, but these have been rare\u2019<\/p>\n<\/p>\n                \n               \n      <h2 class=\"tab-listing\" id=\"verdict\">The Lex 100 verdict on <span class=\"highlight-firm\">Bristows<\/span><\/h2>\n       \n        \n      \n             \n        <p>    \n\t<p>Trainees are drawn to Bristows for its \u201csector focus, quality of partner rankings, D&amp;I focus, culture\u201d and for being \u201cthe top firm for IP work\u201d with a specialisation in \u201clife sciences and technology clients.\u201d Many highlight that Bristows was the only firm they applied to, as it promised \u201can incomparable quality of work in the sciences and technology industries and a generous work life balance \u2013 as a biologist, it was a no brainer.\u201d Others emphasise the combination of \u201can extremely high calibre of clients and intellectual property work in the Life Sciences and industry, as well as a very friendly and inclusive culture which was unlike any other firm.\u201d The firm\u2019s smaller trainee intake also means that trainees \u201cget more responsibility and more opportunities to learn directly from the partners themselves than at other firms,\u201d with the added benefit that \u201cthe familiar and friendly relationship between the trainees and partners is not something I have heard from my friends at other firms.\u201d Training at Bristows is widely praised, with respondents noting that \u201ceveryone I have met is invested in training and your development so is willing to give you their time to help you where they have it\u201d and that \u201cthe quality of work we are given is consistently higher and more interesting than other firms.\u201d Trainees are trusted with \u201cassociate-level work if there is the opportunity for it,\u201d and the approachable structure contrasts with the more hierarchical culture at larger firms. \u201cFrom what I have heard, it seems to be a lot better,\u201d one trainee reflected, highlighting the positive impact of being able to approach supervisors freely. During my law degree, I completed a health law module which sparked my interest in the healthcare sector. I was intrigued by the constant growth, innovation and research that characterises this sector. My MSc in Sustainable Resources: Economics, Policy and Transitions highlighted the critical role of innovation in transitioning to sustainable energy systems and the spread of socially and environmentally acceptable technologies. Bristows, with its diverse clientele, from pharmaceutical giants to universities, biotech companies, and tech start-ups, was an ideal environment for me nurture these interests alongside the law.<\/p>\n<p>The IP workshop allowed me to gain a further insight into the firm and I went on to apply for a training contract. Although certainly thorough, the application journey allowed me the comfort to come to the table as myself. I completed an initial written application, a pre-recorded video interview, followed by two further interviews and a written exercise. Compared to other firms, I was impressed by the welcoming and genuine nature of the interviews. The questions were engaging and designed to stimulate thought rather than catch me out, encouraging a conversational atmosphere that helped me feel relaxed. The interviewers\u2019 genuine interest in my background and motivations, combined with their intellectually stimulating questions, made me confident that Bristows was the right fit for me.<\/p>\n<p>I have thoroughly enjoyed my first year at Bristows. I completed my first seat in commercial, technology, and copyright disputes and I am currently sitting in patent litigation. While a year of contentious work may sound daunting, the work has been diverse, and I have been pushed to become a better trainee as a result. I have been trusted and nurtured by my seniors, who are incredibly helpful, supportive and encouraging. I feel comfortable approaching them with any questions, and they go above and beyond to provide answers from their own experiences.
