Survey Results - Trainee feedback on One Pump Court

The lowdown - Pupils (in their own words) on One Pump Court

We sent The Legal 500 Future Lawyers Pupil and Junior Barrister survey to pupils and juniors up to two years in tenancy at One Pump Court. Here is what they had to say:

Why did you choose these chambers over any others?

‘The ethos and the opportunity to have a mixed practice’, ‘the ethos, practice areas and pupillage structure’

How does/did your training compare with what you hear from pupils/juniors at other chambers?

‘Better than any other chambers. I was well trained but not exploited. I received detailed feedback for work. I was able to watch members of chambers in court. I did not have to work late or on weekends at all’, ‘I am having a healthier experience than most. Pupils are encouraged to not work beyond the contracted hours of 9am-6pm, we have monthly wellbeing check-ins and really supportive supervisors’

Best thing about chambers?

‘The ethos and other members of chambers and staff’, ‘the other members of chambers who are very friendly and supportive, and the kind of work we do’

Worst thing about chambers?

‘The pupillage award is currently London Living Wage and should be higher – I am working on this’, ‘the pupillage award (minimum award) which makes the first six financially difficult’

Best moment to date?

‘I had the opportunity to appear in the Court of Appeal and the High Court in my second six, with the support of my supervisor. He let me run the case but was there to help’, ‘any time I have received positive feedback about my work, which has been a huge confidence boost’

Worst moment to date?

‘Not feeling in control of my time and sometimes being required to do things on very short notice which spills over into my personal life’

CSR/Pro bono?

‘Limitless’, ‘very good – we are encouraged to take on pro bono work’
