Westgate Chambers provides an unrivalled service to solicitors and members of society who find themselves involved with the law. Our aim is straightforward – excellence in Crime, Family, Civil matters, and Regulatory, Health & Safety and Planning Law.

Types of work undertaken Chambers’ work breaks down into the following practice areas:

Crime We retain a dominant presence in Sussex and throughout neighbouring counties, with our team of 34 barristers undertaking a range of defence and protection work at all court levels, from magistrates to Court of Appeal. Our instructions vary from motoring offences and animal cruelty actions to complex homicide trials and appeal work. We prosecute on behalf of the Complex Case Work Units, CPS, the Environment Agency, and Trial Units across the South-Eastern Circuit including London, Portsmouth, Kent, Sussex, Surrey and Thames and Chiltern. In defence matters, we undertake legal aid work and private instructions under the Direct Access Scheme, regularly instructed by firms throughout the home counties as well as well known City firms on a range of crime and regulatory work. A number of our members hold district and circuit judicial appointments. We are proud to have received commendations from external regulators for our Advocacy and the Vulnerable Training programmes.

Family  Based primarily in Sussex, our 14-strong team is best known for its expertise in representing vulnerable clients in all areas of Care work.  Our specialist practitioners are regularly instructed in some of the most complex and serious public law cases (on behalf of local authorities, family members, and guardian and other family representatives. We have acted successfully for our clients in a range of matters that include: child trafficking, forced marriages, neglect, non-accidental injury and sexual abuse. We have extensive experience in ancillary relief matters, Court of Protection work, private law proceedings, secure accommodation matters, injunctions and prohibited steps. Notable successes include Chambers’ instructions in relation to the first forced marriage case in Sussex involving a vulnerable client, and an infant mortality case on behalf of the parents which involved fact finding and welfare hearings in relation to the older sibling of the infant.

Civil / Public/ Regulatory Our members are regularly instructed across a broad range of work that includes: planning, housing, property and land trusts law, health and safety prosecutions, environmental health, school appeals, inquests and actions against the police, contracts, licensing and libel law, probate,  professional negligence, personal injury and  medical negligence, mental health and benefit appeals.

Direct Access Our barristers are licensed to accept instructions direct from members of the public, without the need for an intermediary such as a solicitor. We are a team of approachable and expert barristers who provide clear, solution focussed and effective legal advice in many areas of law. A number of our barristers are also experienced Mediators and Arbitrators, who are able to offer an alternative route to the traditional court-based system to resolve legal issues.

The set  The South Eastern region’s inaugural set of chambers, Westgate Chambers was founded in October 1987 by John Collins and Raymond Fox Byrne (Chambers’ First Clerk). As the South East’s prime legal centre for over 400 years, Lewes was the natural choice of location for the original members of chambers based in the region.

Our First Anniversary was marked by a reception for members at the lodgings of the Lord Chief Justice Lane in Lewes on 21 June 1988. Chambers Tenth Anniversary Dinner was in the presence of the Chief Justice of Ireland, The Hon. Liam Hamilton and the Leader of the House of Lords, Lord Ivor Richards. The 15th, 20th and 25th Anniversary Dinners were presided over by Lady Justice Anne Rafferty, Lady Justice of Appeal and her husband Brian John Barker, the Recorder of London at the Old Bailey.

In the 30 years of its existence, Westgate Chambers has been home to over a 100 lawyers, many of whom have appeared in or presided over some of the most notable trials in the United Kingdom.
