Position

Marie Louise has a specialist practice, focusing on private international law and EU law. She acts as specialist counsel on jurisdiction, choice of law and related issues in a wide variety of claims. Recent work includes acting for the Claimants in the Supreme Court in Vedanta, a jurisdiction dispute in a group environmental claim concerning copper mining in Zambia, and acting for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in the Kenyan Emergency group litigation, a claim by 42,000 Kenyans arising out of the Mau Mau uprising in the 1950s.

She has a particular reputation for appellate work involving novel points of law. In the last year she has appeared in 3 cases in the Supreme Court (Brownlie v Four Seasons, Moreno v MIB, Iraqi civilians v MOD) and regularly appears in the Court of Appeal. She is currently instructed in 4 ongoing appeals including 2 which raise issues concerning the scope of the rules in Rome I and II and the equivalent provisions in the Brussels Recast Regulation.

Apart from her career in Chambers, Marie Louise has taught EU law at Cambridge University and she is frequently invited to lecture in this country and abroad.

Career

Called 1991, Inner Temple. Assistant to the inspectors appointed by the DTI under the Companies Act 1985 to investigate the affairs of Queens Moat Houses plc. Apart from her career in chambers, she has taught European law at Cambridge University. She contributed to ‘European Civil Practice’ (Sweet and Maxwell, 2nd ed).
