He has extensive experience in industrial disease litigation and employer’s liability, with an emphasis on emerging fields such as non-freezing cold injury claims, as well as more typical NIHL, asbestosis and upper limb disorders. His clients range from heavy industries, like Tata Steel, to Public Bodies like NHS Wales.

He works in all aspects of local authority liability ranging from highways, employer’s and occupier’s liability, to very sensitive claims arising from assaults and accidents in secure units, specialist schools and respite centres. He has a loyal following among local authorities ranging from Walsall MBC to Plymouth City Council. He also represents owners of privatised housing estates, housing associations and arms-length management organisations like V2C and Tai Tarian.

Darren has a significant specialism in costs and has dealt with leading cases arising from Jackson, QOCS and Fixed Fee reform. For example Casseldine v The Diocese of Llandaff Board for Social Responsibility (a charity), to Bruno Manuel Dos Santos Mendes v Hochtief Construction (UK) Limited against Nicholas Bacon QC in the High Court, and Wynne v Miller Foundations on the recoverability of VAT on the obtaining of medical records under the present rules.

Darren has an employment law practice that complements his industrial disease and employer’s liability work. He specialises in the crossover between personal injury and employment law with an emphasis on stress at work and cases featuring whistleblowing, as well as regular unfair dismissal and discrimination matters.

Darren LewisSt John’s ChambersThe go-to in the South West on costs issues. Down to earth, commanding presence in court.

St John’s Chambers has a well-established costs team in the region, with leading personal injury barristers advising on costs and funding issues. Described as the ‘go-to’ for costs in the South West region by one client, Darren Lewis is a key member of the set, along with the ‘reliable’ James Marwick. In AS v Wirral NHS Trust, Marwick recently successfully acted for the claimant on appeal in overturning a decision to disallow any success fee.
