Career

A specialist personal injury barrister and part-time judge, Ben has for years been ranked by both Chambers UK and the Legal 500 for his work representing claimants and defendants in complex and high value injury claims. In previous editions his clients have said he is “user friendly and approachable”, “provides a high standard of technical advice”, and “combines great client care skills with tactical nous”.

He was recently appointed Recorder by the King on the advice of the Lord Chancellor and Lord Chief Justice, and he is a qualified mediator.

Well regarded as a trial advocate and a fair but robust negotiator, Ben is particularly noted for his down-to-earth and sensitive approach with clients and families who find themselves involved in litigation after life-changing injuries. He likes to work with his instructing solicitors in an inclusive manner, managing cases as a team.

Specialisms include:

  • Traumatic brain injury (he is currently instructed on matters as junior to Christopher Sharp KC and Matthew Phillips KC)
  • Road accidents involving vulnerable road users such pedestrians, cyclists, and young children
  • Construction site and agricultural accidents
  • Psychiatric harm arising from historic sex abuse
  • CES
  • Complex issues of causation or quantum
  • Sensitive allegations of fraud or fundamental dishonesty

Ben regularly lectures in his areas of expertise to firms of solicitors and specialist organisations. He spoke at Chambers’ most recent Catastrophic Injury Conference, and this September he is presenting alongside Christopher Sharp KC at The Brain Injury Group’s annual Child Brain Injury Training Day to an audience including claimant and defendant catastrophic injury lawyers, Court of Protection lawyers, insurers, charity workers, case managers and other health and social care professionals.
