THE SET

The members of 18 St John Street Chambers have been delivering the highest standards of advice and advocacy services to professional and lay clients for over 45 years. Across our core departments we offer exceptionally skilled practitioners in business and property, civil and personal injury, criminal law and family law. The depth of each department allows us to offer an extensive list of barristers across the full range of seniority and experience who are knowledgeable, insightful and analytical with particular expertise in verbal and written advice, legal drafting, negotiation and court advocacy. Within our dedicated practice groups we provide further teams specialising in additional areas of expertise including clinical negligence, costs, Court of Protection, employment, military proceedings, regulatory and disciplinary proceedings, sports law and tax. Chambers also has an accredited team offering arbitration and mediation services.

Whilst the majority of our work is conducted on the Northern Circuit, members regularly attend conferences, meetings and mediations and undertake advocacy in every level of the Tribunals and Courts across the United Kingdom and further afield. Members appear in the Court of Appeal, Upper Tribunal, Supreme Court and the European Courts. Our members treat each and every case with the utmost sensitivity and confidentiality. We are understanding and sympathetic but firm, focused and professional. We represent individuals directly and via high street, regional and national law firms. We also provide our services to businesses and public sector organisations including the full range of prosecuting authorities and agencies as well as local councils and regional authorities.

We maintain the highest standards and traditions of the independent bar but we are a dynamic and forward thinking chambers. Members have embraced the modern administration of legal practice with paperless working, online resources, document collaboration and the use of electronic diaries and case management systems, a predominant feature in their day-to-day work. Chambers boasts state of the art conference, meeting and mediation facilities including video-link and telephone conference technology.

The success of our members is epitomised by the number who have gone on to be appointed as District, Circuit and High Court Judges. Chambers is able to draw strongly on the knowledge and experience of its currents members who hold judicial and governmental appointments, including Recorders, Deputy District Judges, part-time Judges sitting in the First Tier Tribunals of the Primary Health Lists, Special Educational Needs, Care Standards, Health, Education, Social Care and Tax and Property Chambers, and the Agricultural Land Tribunal for Wales. Four barristers are members of the Attorney-General's Panel of Junior Counsel to the Crown, and three are former university lecturers in law. Other members have worked on secondment for government departments including the Charity Commission and the Care Quality Commission.

Chambers’ clerking and administration teams have a wealth of experience across all fields of practice and areas of accounting. We have dedicated teams of clerks specifically trained to look after clients with specialist knowledge in their own practice areas. Our fees clerks have decades of experience in billing and processing fees in legally aided, privately paid and publically funded matters.

Business & Property Our specialist services include providing robust and practical advice, drafting of documents and high quality advocacy, tailored to the needs of the client across all areas of chancery and commercial litigation. Areas of business law expertise include banking and financial services, bankruptcy and insolvency, civil fraud, company law, consumer credit, contracts, directors duties and disqualification, entertainment law, European law, franchising, housing, insurance, intellectual property (including copyright), landlord and tenant (commercial, residential, and agricultural), mortgages and guarantees, partnerships and joint ventures, product liability, professional negligence, restraint of trade and economic torts and sale of goods. Our property law expertise covers agricultural land and tenancies, boundaries, rights of way and landholder disputes, charities and clubs, environmental law, inheritance & probate, planning and development, land registration disputes, possession of land, proprietary estoppel, restrictive covenants, tax (and especially business and agricultural property relief and trusts of land.

Civil and Personal Injury Our members’ practices focus primarily on personal injury and clinical negligence work. Specialist areas covered include road traffic accidents (including motorcycle and bicycles claims), employers’ liability, public liability and product liability claims. Individual barristers also have expertise in professional negligence, employment law, housing, inquests and costs. We cover all levels of work, from small claims to the most complex matters, including catastrophic injury claims and other high-value litigation. Members of the department regularly receive individual legal directory testimonials and are described as being ‘highly meticulous’, ‘tenacious and skilful’, having ‘medical knowledge [that] is second to none’ and ‘an excellent manner with clients’. We act for both claimants and defendants, and pride ourselves on our approachability and client care.

Crime Our department are regularly instructed in serious, high profile and complicated cases. We offer expertise at all levels of seniority. We prosecute and defend at all stages of the criminal process from pre-charge to the appellate level. Our work includes homicide, terrorism, sexual and violent offences, drugs and importation, fraud and organised crime. Expertise extends to various fields related to criminal law such as regulatory and disciplinary work, confiscation hearings, Parole Board hearings and forfeiture of cash and goods. We have members who bring with them experience from outside the self-employed Bar in forensic science, mediation, the Court of Appeal and the Crown Prosecution Service.

Family Our experienced and dedicated counsel undertake work at all levels across all areas of law involving children, families and finance, who are regularly instructed in complex, high-profile and high-net-worth cases.
