Michelle Caney was called to the Bar in 2004 and joined St Ives Chambers in 2005. She is the Deputy Head of the Business & Property Group and Housing Group.

Miss Caney is an accomplished property litigator who can be trusted with cases of the utmost complexity. She has extensive experience across the full spectrum of business and property litigation. Her busy practice includes chancery litigation, commercial property disputes and general landlord and tenant matters. Miss Caney is sought after for her technical knowledge in tricky areas of law and has notable experience in boundary and easement disputes and TOLATA litigation.

In the social housing arena, Miss Caney is singled out for her expertise in cases involving disability, mental capacity and human rights issues. She is instructed in matters ranging from possession and injunction claims to judicial review claims and service charge disputes. Miss Caney regularly advises on matters of policy and strategic issues facing local authorities and registered providers of social housing.

Miss Caney has a reputation for combining meticulous attention to detail with a down-to-earth approach and always fighting hard to achieve her client’s objectives. She is highly regarded as an advocate and has a strong reputation both in and out of the courtroom.  

Miss Caney has previously appeared in the Court of Appeal as sole counsel and is currently being led in an important appeal concerning the nature of injunctive relief available against ‘Persons Unknown’ in Unauthorised Encampment cases.
