The set

Pump Court International comprises QCs and juniors who between them have extensive experience over a wide range of commercial disputes. The broad spread of seniority ensures that a suitable individual or team can be found to assist at any stage of the arbitration process, whether it be as arbitrator, advocate, or to undertake drafting or preparatory work, and at a cost appropriate to the task in hand.

It has particular experience in partnering both with international and local law firms and assisting them in managing the dispute and arbitration process wherever that dispute arises and is to be resolved.

Areas of practice

Banking and finance: the set has a wealth of experience in banking and financial services including those involving transactions across a range of exchanges as well as disputes concerning syndicated and other loan agreements, disputes concerning close-out amounts under derivative contracts, FOREX manipulation, freight forwarding agreements and junk bonds.

Members of Pump Court International have familiarity with many of the challenges and issues facing those in the international banking, insurance and wider financial services space with experience of cross-border issues and jurisdictional issues.

Commercial (cross border): the set has experience in all aspects of general commercial arbitration and appears regularly in these matters. Its work includes, but is not limited to, insurance and reinsurance, banking and securities, financing, sale and carriage of goods, aviation, shipping, the purchase and sale of commodities, the operation of international markets and exchanges, the construction and performance of mercantile contracts, share sale and purchase agreements, and media and entertainment.

Construction and engineering: the set has expertise in all aspects of construction, engineering, and infrastructure disputes in relation to global and domestic projects. It acts for employers, contractors, sub-contractors; for government; for insurers and professionals. The set has extensive experience as specialist advocates and have been involved in many of the highest profile cases.

Energy and offshore: from pipelines in South East Asia to power stations in the Middle East, from oilfields in the Caspian to wind turbines off the UK coastline, the set has exceptional experience in all aspects of energy-related disputes. It can provide a rapid service in line with the demands of clients and takes pride in its reputation for getting to grips with the technical detail of cases without overlooking the necessary commercial priorities.

Insurance and reinsurance: the set has been involved in all major insurance and reinsurance issues and cases which have affected the London and international markets within the last 30 years, including the Lloyd's litigation, the PA LMX spiral, Film Finance and US catastrophes including 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina.

The set regularly advises on all types of policies across the entire insurance spectrum (including among others product liability, professional liability, construction and energy risks, property and business interruption, PA and health, credit and political risk, cyber media and tech, transport and aviation). It has considerable experience across a wide range of insurance law issues, including non-disclosure and misrepresentation, breach of warranty, fraudulent claims (and fraudulent devices) and subrogation.

Shipping and ship building: its work covers all areas of dry shipping, wet shipping, commodities, and ship construction and sales. Members of its team work with international law firms and P&I clubs on behalf of ship owners, charterers, shipyards, drilling contractors, cargo interests and banks. The set has expertise in charterparty and bill of lading disputes, ship sale and purchase, ship mortgages, liens, admiralty matters including collision, towage and pilotage, and also commercial shipbuilding, superyacht and mega yacht disputes.

Technology and telecoms: the set has a wealth of experience in IT, e-commerce and telecommunications law. It is regularly instructed in relation to disputes arising out of project failures and delays, defective hardware and software, IP licences and other contractual matters. It brings unrivalled expertise including in the emerging fields of cloud computing and cyber security. Members are involved in some of the largest copyright and contractual cases, and regularly act for major industry figures.
