Avirup Chaudhuri
Position
Avirup Chaudhuri has been in chambers for 15 years, during which time he has prosecuted and defended in a wide range of criminal cases. In recent years he has defended, both alone and as a junior, in a number of cases involving allegations of serious and/or professional crime; these include: attempted murder; large-scale importation and distribution of class A and B drugs; ‘bootlegging’ cases involving the evasion of major sums of duty; armed robberies; and receiving goods stolen to order. In addition, Avirup has both prosecuted and defended serious sex cases involving children, both as complainants and defendants; he has defended police officers in criminal cases; and also advised the CPS Casework Directorate as to whether to prosecute police officers. Recent cases include briefs in ‘Operation Harpoon’ (large gang of youths committing robberies on public transport over a six month period); on behalf of a defendant in Harmondsworth detention ‘riot’; and for the first serving Metropolitan Police officer to be prosecuted for incest.
