Keating Chambers > Set Profile
Keating Chambers is a leading commercial barristers’ chambers based in London, with a thriving domestic and international practice.
We specialise in providing services across the areas of construction (onshore and offshore), energy, engineering, infrastructure, procurement, property, professional negligence, planning and environment, shipbuilding and marine engineering, and technology. With 70 barristers (including 31 silks) we have the strength in depth across the range of seniorities to support our clients’ needs. We also have a number of international members based in either Australia, Hong Kong, India or Singapore, enabling us to provide commercial and practical advice, together with a first rate flexible and client-focused service, worldwide.
Our barristers act in the very highest value and most significant project disputes in the world. Specialists in advocacy, their ability to offer incisive and critical cross examination in conjunction with expertise in presenting a case in the best possible way is of great value to clients. We have formidable experience in all the stages of a construction dispute from procurement issues and early initial advisory work, to mediation, adjudication and litigation or arbitration. Our members appear in the UK Courts (primarily the TCC and Commercial Court), including the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court, and in international arbitration, frequently in relation to contracts governed by foreign law. They are familiar with domestic and international, and on and offshore, standard forms of contract (including FIDIC, NEC, IChemE, LOGIC, SAJ and AWES), and regularly act in disputes concerning bespoke contracts. They also have extensive experience with PPP, PFI, and partnering and alliancing contracts. Our expertise is augmented by our experience in construction professional negligence and disputes in other project related sectors such as energy, offshore construction and marine engineering, and infrastructure and utilities.
Internationally, members are instructed as counsel or arbitrator in arbitrations governed by many of the world’s leading appointing bodies, such as the ICC, LCIA, AIAC, DIAC, HKIAC, SIAC and VIAC. They are also instructed/appointed directly by parties to arbitrations under ICSID and UNCITRAL rules. Members act as experts on English law in overseas jurisdictions, and some members have rights of audience in other jurisdictions (such as Dubai (DIFC), Hong Kong SAR, New Zealand, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland).
We are the authors of the seminal practitioner textbook in the field, ‘Keating on Construction Contracts’ (now in its 11th Edition) and other staple industry texts include ‘Keating on NEC3’, ‘Keating on Offshore Construction and Marine Engineering Contracts’ and the ‘Keating Construction Dispute Resolution Handbook’. We are also committed to providing training and development to clients and can offer complimentary in-house training seminars on a broad range of topics.
The talent of our barristers and the dedication of our staff are reflected in Chambers’ success in the leading legal directories and industry awards, most recently winning The Lawyer’s “Chambers of the Year” (2020), Chambers & Partners’ “Construction Set of the Year” (2020) and “International Arbitration Set of the Year” (2019), and The Legal 500’s “Construction & Energy
Set of the Year” (2020).
Our clerking team is renowned for the relationships they foster with clients. The team are widely praised for being responsive, efficient, commercial and user-friendly. They are contactable outside UK working hours to ensure they provide a first-class service to our international clients.

:Diversity
Keating Chambers is committed to (1) promoting and advancing equality and diversity in all its dealings, particularly in the provision of its services to its clients, the recruitment and retention of all Members, pupils and staff and fair access to work; and (2) providing a work environment in which all individuals, clients and the public are treated with dignity and respect.
Chambers’ Equality Action Plan includes (1) the regular review and updating of its policies; (2) the requirement and provision of training in fair recruitment, equality and diversity issues; (3) bi-annual monitoring of all recruitment by sex, ethnicity and disability (4) the undertaking of an annual earnings review and (5) an annual access audit to review making chambers accessible for disabled persons.
We aim to be at the forefront of gender diversity. We have a high percentage of females in Chambers, across barristers and staff, including a high proportion of female silks. We are strong supporters of the Equal Representation in Arbitration Pledge, which seeks to increase, on an equal opportunity basis, the number of women appointed as arbitrators to achieve a fair representation as soon as practically possible, with the goal of full parity.
In Summer 2022 we collaborated with Lamb Building to host a Summer School. This enabled us to reach a wide range of students who might not have otherwise considered coming to the Commercial Bar. The event was run virtually to ensure maximum accessibility. As well as learning what it is like to practice in these areas, sessions covered pupillage applications, interview skills, advocacy and life as a pupil.
We recognise the importance of the “TECBAR BAME Network” and its efforts to enhance inclusion, participation and progression at the Technology and Construction Bar. We have supported this by hosting CV workshops in Chambers to provide support and encouragement to ethnic minorities considering a career at the Bar, and two Keating barristers were involved in authoring The Specialist Commercial Bar & Black Inclusion – First Steps Report.
We are a founding partner of Bridging the Bar (BTB), a charity committed to the promotion of equal opportunities and diversity within the Bar. BTB aims to support students from all underrepresented groups including those from a low socio-economic background, minority ethnic background, those who identify as being part of the LGBTQ+ community, students who have a disability or long-term health condition and other communities who are “statistically underrepresented in the profession”.
We were one of the first five sets to sign up to the 10,000 Black Interns programme. This initiative aims to transform the horizons and prospects of young Black people in the United Kingdom by offering paid work experience across a wide range of industries. The aim is to provide training and development opportunities and to create a sustainable cycle of mentorship and sponsorship for the Black community.
We have also adopted a contextual recruitment system for our pupillages, mini-pupillages and senior staff recruitment, which will improve our approach to secure people in Chambers from diverse backgrounds who might be disadvantaged by the traditional means of recruitment.
