Pump Court Chambers (Chambers of Oba Nsugbe QC)

Position

James is an experienced and busy barrister in criminal and regulatory law. He prosecutes and defends in large, multi-defendant trials (drugs conspiracies, armed robberies, fraud and money laundering and murder) with large volumes of complex telephone and forensic evidence. A recent trial (R v Loveridge & others) concerned violent cash-in-transit robberies of banks and it attracted strong press interest. Other examples include the trials of R v Beagley & others (an organised plot to murder), R v Taiwo (a £1.5m identity fraud) and R v Thomas & others (a major cocaine supply conspiracy). James also specialises in prosecuting and defending in difficult cases of rape and child abuse and in other trials that require sensitive handling of vulnerable witnesses. Recent examples include the successful defence of a former teacher charged with sexual offences dating back 50 years (R v Couch), and the successful defence of a young man who was charged with raping his young step-sister (R v Marlow). James defends in court martial hearings and in serious road traffic cases, including causing death by dangerous driving. One recent trial involved multiple deaths that were caused by drivers racing on a motorway and difficult issues of causation. His regulatory practice encompasses health and safety matters, transport inquiries, maritime law and medical disciplinary hearings.
