Michael Wolkind QC
Michael Wolkind QC has acted in more than 240 murders and in countless other high-profile cases, including international terrorism. He led his first murder early in the 1980s, a sensational front-page acquittal for a man who chopped up, then baked and boiled his wife’s remains. He started 2012 with a headline success when he beat DNA odds of 1,000 billion to one in the brutal killing of a prostitute. He started 2013 with the acquittal of a solicitor charged with fraud, followed by the acquittal of an Arsenal supported charged with murder in Liverpool before the match. He started in 2014 with the re-trial acquittal of a serving police officer, convicted of rape before Michael was instructed. Michael does win cases in months apart from January. He acted for the London nail-bomber, Copeland; the Norfolk farmer, Tony Martin, on his winning appeal; and for the main defendant in the 7 July 2005 bombing conspiracy, Waheed Ali. He acted for Gary Dobson in his first trial, when acquitted of the Steven Lawrence murder. He has a particularly extensive appeal practice, with a continuous case load of reviewing murder and other serious crime convictions, where he did not appear at trial. In regulatory work, he has represented health professionals, solicitors and barrister, among others. He is sought after to defend in Cayman, Bahamas, Trinidad and elsewhere. Considered by many to be ‘the best cross-examiner at the Bar’,’ he is one of the few counsel whose colleagues will actually take time out to go and watch’.
