Amanda Illing has been Chief Executive of Hardwicke for the last eight years, having joined initially as Chambers Director.  Her role is to take a lead in the strategic development and management of chambers and to implement its business plan. She takes a key role with colleagues in developing business and long-lasting relationships with clients. She also takes responsibility for the recruitment of and career development of the barristers at Hardwicke, and her staff team.

Amanda was previously the Private Secretary to the Director of Public Prosecutions and a caseworker in the Crown Prosecution Service, handling cases such as the appeal of the Birmingham Six, and the first corporate manslaughter prosecution following the sinking of the Herald of Free Enterprise.

Amanda is a Chartered Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD). She is a trustee of the London Legal Support Trust (LLST) and an accredited ADR mediator.

Innovation is a key objective for both Amanda personally and Hardwicke as a chambers.  The latest project to be completed was delivery of a new website in late 2018 showcasing Hardwicke’s expertise and giving viewers the ability to reach the information in which they are interested quickly and in a variety of formats to suit their requirements.

Corporate social responsibility and EDI is another area in which Hardwicke leads the Bar and Amanda takes a personal interest.  In this regard, she supports FreeBar, a forum focused on LGBT+ people and their allies working at and for the Bar.  She is a signatory to the ERA Pledge, a gender diversity initiative to promote equal representation in arbitration.

I am delighted to prepare a testimonial for Hardwicke, who have been my “go to” chambers for over 15 years. During that time it has been a pleasure to see their chambers grow in strength both by way of the barristers they have and the support staff behind them. There is a genuine sense of seeking to help you, as a solicitor, and to serve your client, whilst preserving a strong independence to ensure the client is at the heart of the issue/service provided. Amanda Illing is a stand out CEO who have taken chambers to the next level and her team reflect her values and accessibility. Special mention goes to Natasha Devlin-Clingham in the clerks room on whom total reliance can be depended to ensure counsel is aware of your requests and updates if counsel is unavailable of some reason. Stand out barristers include Jasmine Murphy, who will rightly ensure the client is best served by their solicitor and Colm Nugent, who has a calm, friendly but authoritative manner. It is a great team to have on your side. (A client).

Hardwicke’s Laurence Page and Michael Marris on Sharp v Blank [2019] EWHC 3078 (Ch)

Hardwicke’s members and staff are committed to equal opportunities at work and at the Bar. This commitment manifests itself in our policies and procedures, in our strategic objectives, and in our recruitment processes. Chambers has an Equality Diversity and Inclusion Committee to promote our policies and objectives and help improve and monitor our compliance.

Chambers supports a number of initiatives aimed at encouraging and supporting greater diversity:

Gender

  • Our people belong to numerous gender equality groups and industry organisations promoting gender equality.
  • Our Parental Leave Policy makes it as easy, transparent and financially beneficial for both parents to take leave as it would be for one parent to do so.
  • We have a Transgender Policy which has involved both a review of all policies and our constitution to ensure they are gender neutral and a review of signage throughout chambers.
  • Chambers is also committed to ensuring diversity and equality on the chambers management committee.
  • We aim to include a woman wherever possible in our speaking and business development activities. · We are signatories to the ERA Pledge: http://www.arbitrationpledge.com/

LGBT+

  • Hardwicke collaborated with other chambers to create FreeBar, a network for everyone at the Bar who believes in equality for LGBT+ individuals and their allies.
  • Chambers is working with other colleagues at FreeBar to set up the FreeBar Charter: best practice in barristers’ chambers (due to be launched in 2020).
  • We are also members of Free Hold which is a LGBT organisation aimed at professionals working in the property sector.
  • Chambers is a Stonewall Diversity champion and has been for many years.

Social diversity and mobility

  • We have for the last 8 years run a university placement scheme aimed at non-Russell Group universities to give an undergraduate the opportunity to work as a full-time employee of chambers in the marketing and IT support teams in their industry year.
  • We have also run a massively over-subscribed work experience programme for over 10 years aimed at those from backgrounds that are under-represented at the Bar and those who work in chambers.

Racial diversity

  • Hardwicke’s members and staff have worked with Herbert Smith Freehills on their RBS First Step programme insight day. RBS Legal First Step is an intensive one week programme developed to give A Level students that are people of colour and/or from socially disadvantaged backgrounds greater opportunities, experience and contacts to help them consider and pursue a career in law or business.
  • One of our senior barristers is a Founding member of the Women’s Network of the British Nigeria Law Forum.
  • Members and staff mentor black students and people of colour informally and through their own networks and speak at state schools and mosques.

We are the only chambers to allocate a specific part of member and staff profiles on our website to describing, celebrating and promoting CSR.
