Joy practices in all areas of criminal defence work, including violent crime, public disorder, fraud, weapons and drugs offences. She is a determined advocate who will always fight her client’s corner and has a particular interest in representing young and vulnerable clients.
In 2017, Joy secured an acquittal in one of the first cases to hear expert evidence challenging the status of nitrous oxide as a psychoactive substance under the Psychoactive Substances Act 2016. She has developed specialist experience dealing with this controversial new law, and has since appeared in the appellate courts in respect of the appropriate approach to sentencing in such cases.
Recent experience as a led junior includes an armed robbery of a public house with an imitation firearm, and an acquittal for a Royal Mail employee accused of involvement in an £8m fraud.
