Busy practitioner instructed in serious criminal and regulatory proceedings. Has defended allegations of manslaughter, high-value fraud and drug conspiracies. Current instructions include a kidnap case and complex cross-jurisdictional confiscation proceedings. Examples of medical regulatory work include proceedings involving charges of contributing to a patient’s death as well as cases concerning breaches of professional boundaries. Recently instructed by the FCA in respect of their joint PRA investigation into the Co-op Bank’s £1.5bn capital shortfall. The investigation culminated in a censure for the firm and its CEO; the first occasion on which a CEO of any bank has been formally censured since the 2008 crisis. Specialist expertise in election law; recently acted for the DPP in the Tower Hamlets’ Election Petition and advised regarding the potential for a follow-on criminal prosecution. Experienced in private prosecutions having acted for the RSPCA and League Against Cruel Sports. Particular understanding of the issues arising in animal welfare and Hunting Act proceedings; appeared in the ‘landmark’ prosecution of the Heythrop Hunt.
