Position

QC specialising in insurance and reinsurance (in particular relating to asbestos, product and environmental liabilities), professional liability (including lawyers, accountants, financial services professionals and insurance brokers), product liability (including commercial products, food safety, pharmaceuticals, medical devices, vaccines and blood); commercial litigation (including civil fraud), international arbitration, public and constitutional law and inquiries. 

Formerly First Counsel to the Welsh Government 2013-2016. Has also acted for a wide range of UK Government departments and public bodies. Has appeared in 5 Supreme Court or House of Lords cases. 

Major recent cases include Goodlife Foods Ltd v Hall Fire Protection Ltd [2018] EWCA Civ 1371 (commercial product liability); Akcine Bendrove Bankas Snoras v Antonov [2018] EWHC 887 (Comm) (commercial; worldwide freezing injunction); Redman v Zurich Insurance Plc [2018] 1 WLR 280 (insurance); The Khan Partnership v Al-Shanfari & Al-Rawas [2017] 1 WLR 2301 (limitation, solicitors’ negligence); Cape Distribution Ltd v Cape Intermediate Holdings Ltd [2016] EWHC 1786 & [2016] EWHC 1119 (insurance, asbestos disease); International Energy Group v Zurich [2016] AC 509 (insurance, asbestos liability); Secretary of State for the Home Department v Raytheon Systems Ltd[2015] 1 Lloyd’s Rep 493 (IT, arbitration); Abbey Forwarding (in Liquidation) v Revenue and Customs Commissioners; [2015] Bus LR 882 (insolvency); the PIP Breast Implant Litigation insurance dispute (2015), the Employers’ Liability Insurance Trigger Litigation [2012] 1 WLR 867; the Atomic Veterans Litigation  [2012] 2WLR 643 (product liability) and The Miners’ Knee Litigation [2012] EWCA Civ 1380 (limitation, personal injury group litigation).

Career

Called to Bar 1993. Appointed QC 2009. Appointed Deputy High Court Judge 2016. Member of COMBAR Brexit Working Party 2016 to date. Appointed Senior Decision-Maker for Guernsey Financial Services Commission 2014. First Counsel to the Welsh Government 2013-2016. Director of Bar Mutual Indemnity Fund Ltd 2011to date. Treasury Counsel (A Panel) 2006-2009. Elected a Bencher of Inner Temple 2018. CEDR accredited mediator since 1998. Also called to Bar of Republic of Ireland 1998.
