Position

Paul is a leading civil practitioner on the North Eastern Circuit, his expansive practice covering a wide range of areas including employment; personal injury; regulatory;  mediation.

Paul is an accredited civil and commercial and workplace mediator, having mediated in over 50 mediations. He is recognised as one of the leading names in the Mediation market. He regularly mediates in a wide range of disputes, including commercial; employment including race and sex discrimination; public sector; solicitors and valuer’s negligence claims; medical negligence and personal injury claims, probate, trusts, property and boundary disputes. Paul has developed a busy offshore mediation practice, particularly in the Isle of Man, where he has successfully mediated a number of high value claims.

He is well regarded for his employment practice, appearing regularly on behalf of clients in the Employment Tribunal, the Employment Appeal Tribunal and the Civil Courts. He has substantial experience in the public sector dealing with the Police, Local Authority, NHS and PC trusts with reference particularly to Discrimination, Public Interest Disclosure, Data Protection, Freedom of Information, and Disciplinary issues.

Paul undertakes all manner of work within the personal injury field, specialising in traumatic brain and spinal cord injury, amputee and chronic pain claims, vehicular and road traffic accidents, dangerous sports claims, and industrial disease-related claims. Paul’s clinical negligence practice encompasses hospital, GP and health practitioner claims, birth-related injuries and surgical claims.

Paul is also one of a select group of barristers instructed on behalf of the Police Federation to represent its members. Paul has substantial experience of the Police Pensions Regulations, including injury on duty, medical questions and the requirement to refer to the Selected Medical Practitioner, with particular exposure to appeals to the Crown Court under the Regulations. He has also played a substantial advisory role in the redrafting of the management, financial and disciplinary rules of the National Association of Retired Police Office’s.

Paul also has a significant breadth of experience in Inquests work, particularly relating to fatal accident at work, hospital / negligence deaths and social services / local authority related inquests.
