Mr Gerard Martin QC
Personal Injury and Clinical Negligence
Gerard has almost exclusively been instructed by those acting for Claimants. He has over twenty three years experience and expertise in representing those who have suffered life changing injuries. The majority of his work over the past 16 years as a silk has been for clients with severe brain injuries, be they adults or children, the injuries caused by accidents or by clinical negligence. Gerard’s expertise is both in the investigation of the liability issues in the accident or clinical incident, and then in the management of the client’s rehabilitation culminating in a successful conclusion, usually by negotiation. Much depends on early involvement of Gerard as the silk, and then working with the solicitor and family to choose the strongest team of experts to aid the case.
Each case of severe brain injury is unique as is each client’s outcome, much depends upon the individual and the support they receive from family, friends and the therapeutic team. Gerard regards visiting the client at home at an early stage of the case as important top understanding the client’s perspective. Ensuring that the rehabilitation team are proactive and goal sensitive is part of the management plan employed by Gerard during the case.
He uses the same approach outlined above to other areas of his practice which includes managing claims for amputees, spinal cord, complex regional pain syndrome and other somatoform disorders.
With regard to amputees, this area of practice has been a special interest for 23 years and has led to Gerard chairing and presenting at national seminars on amputee rehabilitation.
Called 1978 (Silk 2000). He joined Chambers in 1979 and from the start of his professional life has practised in the personal injury field. Former Chair of the Northern Circuit Medical Law Association. Former Record. Accredited Mediator.
- Cambridge, Law degree 2.1, 1974-1977
