Position

Mary-Teresa’s children practice covers both public and private law, including adoption, SGOs and applications for temporary or permanent removal of a child from the jurisdiction, to both non- and Hague convention countries. In private law proceedings Mary-Teresa is frequently instructed in highly conflictual private law cases where the children are parties. Fact finding is a particular area of expertise. Many public law and private law cases involve expert evidence, particularly medical evidence. Mary-Teresa has expanded her practice to represent vulnerable adults in a wider range of circumstances, including the provision of social care, where there is a conflict of provision of care and cases in the Court of Protection. In addition Mary-Teresa presents cases on behalf of the Royal College of Nursing; she has a particular interest in cases heard by the Health Committee where her expertise in assessing, presenting and challenging medical evidence is valued. Mary-Teresa is greatly valued by instructing solicitors for her client care skills combined with her willingness and availability to advise in cases from their commencement. A particular strength is Mary-Teresa’s ability to look at a case from its commencement, identify objectives and provide ongoing case management advice. An instructing solicitor has described Mary-Teresa as ‘creating order out of chaos’ while her written submissions have been described by a judge of the Family Division as ‘life saving’. Mary-Teresa is a trained mediator for both children and financial matters and is a member of the ADR group. Mary- Teresa is public access trained.
