Barrister practising in commercial litigation, the conflict of laws, construction, professional liability, and civil fraud.

Career

Ian joined 4 New Square in October 2018, following the successful completion of his pupillage, and is developing a broad commercial practice. He recently appeared in Ang v. Reliantco Investments Limited [2019] EWHC 879 (Comm), led by Matthew Bradley, involving a jurisdiction challenge under the recast Brussels I Regulation (in particular, the choice-of-court and consumer contract provisions). He regularly acts in claims by or against professionals including solicitors, surveyors, and financial practitioners, and often appears in his own right in the County Court.

Ian has a keen interest in the conflict of laws. Alongside his busy practice, he is studying part-time for a DPhil in Law – focusing on common law defences to the recognition and enforcement of foreign judgments – at Brasenose College, Oxford, under the supervision of Professor Andrew Dickinson. He is also a teaching assistant for the Conflict of Laws module on the BCL and delivers tutorials in the same subject to visiting students at St Catherine’s College, Oxford.
