Position

Caroline specialises in employment, discrimination, personal injury and clinical negligence work. She advises and represents clients across the full range of employment disputes, with particular expertise in TUPE, unfair dismissal and discrimination. She acts for both claimants and respondents, advising and representing corporations and NHS Trusts, as well as individuals, law centres and trade unions. In her personal injury and clinical negligence practice Caroline settles the full range of pleadings and schedules of loss. She advises and represents clients in conference, negotiation and at trial. Widely acknowledged as an excellent, persuasive and skillful advocate, Caroline’s strong courtroom presence and impressive client-handling skills are evident in the complex cases she has managed. In 2014/2015 Caroline has been instructed in two complex whistleblowing cases, one exceeding three weeks representing two claimants and another exceeding five weeks representing an NHS Trust. In 2013/2014 Caroline represented Group Captain Wendy Williams, the then most senior serving nurse in the RAF, in her successful claim of sex discrimination in Williams v MOD [2013] EqLR 856. The tribunal awarded substantial financial compensation and made far-reaching recommendations to seek to avoid future discrimination in the MOD.

Career

Called to the Bar in 2008, having first worked as a relief and development professional for six years in the UK, Pakistan, Indonesia and Rwanda. In 2013 Caroline undertook a three month long research fellowship at the Harvard Law School Project on Disability in Boston, USA. Her research focused on the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and how the Convention can be used as a lever to further the rights of persons with disabilities, particularly those living in institutions.
