Chris enjoys a practice at the forefront of employment and equalities law. He appears in the Court of Appeal, EAT, High Court, County Court and of course the Employment Tribunal. He wins consistent praise from solicitors and clients alike for his specialist expertise and his user-friendly style. His practise encompasses the full range of employment disputes, including all forms of discrimination, equal pay, whistleblowing, TUPE, redundancy, collective consultation claims and high court injunctive work. Recent instructions include: a TUPE service provision change worth an estimated £2m; a High Court action as to the negligence liability of public authorities for the content of CRB Certificates; Jessemey v Rowstock [2014] 1 WLR 3615 (post-employment victimisation); Taiwo v Olaigbe [2014] 1 WLR 3636 (domestic servitude and race discrimination) in the Court of Appeal; the landmark case of Tirkey v Chandhok [2015] IRLR 195, which confirmed that caste discrimination is already covered under EqA 2010. Chris is particularly well regarded on whistleblowing matters, having acted in Smania v Standard Chartered Bank [2015] ICR 271, and he continues to act in the well publicised Bamieh v Foreign and Commonwealth Office. In total he has appeared in 23 reported decisions over the last five years. Chris undertakes work for both claimants and respondents. Professional clients vary from hedge funds to the Church of England and include charities, universities, FTSE 100 companies, the BBC, NHS Trusts and public authorities. When acting for claimants he is instructed by trade unions, law centres and lay individuals ranging from high-net-worth managers to migrant directors. He is one of only six barristers on the EHRC B-Panel under 10 years’ call. In providing a consistently high standard of service, Chris enjoys regular and repeat instructions from solicitors of the highest calibre. Chris also enjoys an active practice in personal injury. He acts in a considerable number of high-value disputes, including fatal accident and clinical negligence claims. He puts his knowledge of the crossover between employment and personal injury matters to use in the sensitive area of stress at work claims.
