Sally Hatfield QC
Clinical negligence; medical law; inquests; personal injuries.
Sally has for many years specialised in medical law.
Her principal area of practice is in clinical negligence. She is instructed, principally on behalf of claimants, in cases involving injuries of maximum severity or clinical situations of great complexity. A sample of her recent caseload includes maternal and neonatal death or brain injury arising from obstetric mismanagement, wrongful birth claims involving grave congenital malformation, neonatal injury secondary to failures in intensive care or at surgery, cauda equina syndrome, cancer, stroke, amputation and other vascular injury.
She has extensive experience in cases involving mental health issues, in a clinical negligence and personal injury context, covering allegations of psychiatric negligence, local authority liability for abuse, the psychiatric ramifications of abuse and negligence. Recent cases involve clinical negligence claims resulting from failure to diagnose and treat psychiatric conditions, a claim against a convicted sexual abuser in person for damages for physical and psychiatric injury.
Sally also has a personal injury practice, again particularly involving medical issues of medical or psychiatric causation arising in any context.
She provides representation at inquests, particularly involving deaths raising medical issues.
Sally has been at the bar since 1988, initially in London at Doughty Street Chambers, but in Manchester since 2002. She took silk in 2013. She was appointed as a Recorder of the Crown Court in 2004, and of the County Court in 2015. She has been an Assistant Coroner for Manchester Central since 2008. She lectures regularly on issues relating to clinical negligence, particularly on liability trials. She is trained as an arbitrator with the PiCARBS scheme.
