Miss Gillian Irving QC
Gillian Irving QC is one of the North of England’s leading public family law silks. She practices on the Northern and North Eastern circuits She has over 35 years’ experience of representing local authorities and parents in contentious and highly complex cases involving the death of and catastrophic injuries to a child; non-accidental head injury; fabricated and induced illness, sexual abuse, alleged radicalization of children and vitamin D deficiency .Her cases demand a thorough knowledge and grasp of the medical issues and the research relevant to them. She has appeared at every level and in several high profile cases such as in the Family Court hearings and then the Inquests into the death of Poppi Worthington. She has numerous reported cases to her name including in the Supreme Court.
She is renowned for her skills in cross-examination and her ability to analyse and dissect volumes of highly complex material.
She has been sitting as a part –time judge in the First Tier Social Care Tribunal for over 20 years in the fields of Mental Health and Care Standards. Historically she was Counsel who represented the patients on the Personality Disorder Unit at Ashworth High Secure Hospital in the second public Inquiry into it management and their treatment . She has represented Mental Health Trusts at appeals before the Upper Tier Tribunal.
