Position

Criminal defence work, with an emphasis on cases with a trans-national element, most often with non-English speaking clients. Heavy duty drugs cases, human trafficking, money laundering and fraud – together and domestically – with offences of violence, sex offences etc. He is licensed to receive instruction direct from members of the public. Expert in European legal systems. His knowledge of adversarial justice systems and civil code systems gives him a keen appreciation of evidential issues in international courts. He has handled a multitude of cases with transnational and international dimensions, and has been invited to address a variety of bodies on criminal law subjects, with an emphasis on comparative law. Defence counsel International Criminal Court; defence lead counsel Special Tribunal for the Lebanon, including 2010 training for defence counsel; defence counsel at International Tribunal for Rwanda. Lecturer to British Spanish Lawyers’ Association on Spanish criminal justice; lecturer on Criminal Investigation Procedures in Europe from the perspective of comparative law at the Judicial College of the Spanish Consejo General del Poder Judicial in Barcelona. Notable cases include: oral trials in Mexico 2006-08 – preparation and training of Mexican judges, lawyers, police and investigators in respect of constitutional reforms adopted introducing oral trials, under the auspices of the Foreign Office, the British Council and the Instituto Nacional de Ciencias Penales (INACIPE); jury trials in Kazakhstan 2006, training judges and lawyers in jury trial techniques with Steven Kay QC (Almaty, Astana, Aktobe).
