Ben’s practice focuses on the chemical, chemical engineering and life sciences sectors. He has particular expertise in the fields of air and gas separation, cryogenics, combustion, syngas, semiconductor manufacture, new chemical entities, chemical formulations, pharmaceuticals and medical treatments, protein and nucleic acid synthesis and purification, and antibodies. Ben acts directly for a number of multinational corporations, and in this capacity he regularly drafts applications for filing before the US, European and International Patent Offices; prosecutes cases before the European and International Patent Office; and consults on the prosecution of cases in the US, Japan, China, India and elsewhere. Ben defends his clients’ patents and challenges competitors’ patents in opposition and appeal proceedings before the European Patent Office; and provides patent landscape, infringement and freedom-to-operate opinions. He also works with several small and medium-sized companies, advising them on and handling all aspects of their patent portfolios.


After obtaining a masters degree in intellectual property (being one of only two candidates in his year to obtain a pass with distinction), Ben joined the profession in 1999, and qualified as a European patent attorney in just three years. Ben qualified as a European patent attorney in 2002 and a chartered patent attorney in 2003. He is also a European design attorney. Ben joined Beck Greener in 2004 and became a partner in 2008.

Starting January 1st, 2013, a new tax law (Law No. 822, Tax Concertation Law) came into force in and completely changed the taxation system in Nicaragua. Two years later a new law was issued by the National Assembly containing more than 80 amendments, additions and repeals (Law No 891) which came into force December 18th, 2014.
