Martin is a Chartered Patent Attorney and European Patent Attorney, and has a strong background in biochemistry and biotechnology. He represents clients ranging from UK government and blue chip biotech companies through to spin-outs/ start-ups. Martin specializes in technologies that include re-targeted toxins, vaccines, expression systems, microbial detection assays, cytokine-based therapeutics, and agrochemicals.
His principal practice areas include drafting and global prosecution, freedom-to-operate, strategic advice, and patent opposition/ defense. Martin obtained a first degree (Warwick University) in microbial technology, and a PhD (Warwick University) in biochemistry of acidophilic bacteria. He also has a masters degree in IP from London University. Martin qualified as a Patent Attorney in 1999, joined Mathys & Squire in the same year, and became a Partner of the firm in 2004.
