Career

Ed has a particular interest in the food & drink industry, being the head of the GJE Food, Drink & Hospitality sector group. His experience also extends to consumer electronics, fashion and sportswear, media and entertainment and financial services.

His work includes assisting clients from start-ups to large multi-nationals with all aspects of trade marks, including guidance as to appropriate freedom to operate and filing strategies for new brands and markets, assistance in obtaining registered protection by handling objections and oppositions all around the world including negotiating settlements, health checks of existing portfolios and advising on the enforcement of rights against third parties. Ed also has experience in due diligence work, both for clients looking to acquire a target and those that are subject to an offer to purchase.

Over the past year Ed has successfully defended a client against a malicious squatter attack in China and continues to advise in relation to the associated court action. The client’s goods were removed from the various ecommerce platforms as a result of the squatter’s actions but it was possible to rebut the attack and to have the goods subsequently re-listed. Ed has also provided IP due diligence to a client in two successful multi-million pound acquisitions and advised another client in relation to a long-running opposition with a  famous global brand that has now been concluded with a settlement.
