Laura Terrell focuses her practice on advising clients globally regarding litigation, government investigations, corporate internal investigations and compliance, anti-bribery and anti-corruption matters, regulatory matters, corporate governance and reporting, government affairs, sanctions and export controls, employment and whistleblower issues.

She has represented and defended corporations and individuals in a number of industries, including pharmaceutical/life sciences, fast moving consumer goods, oil and gas, financial/banking, energy, higher education, hospitality and leisure, engineering and telecommunications. She has appeared in trial and appellate courts throughout the United States in a variety of matters.  In addition, she provides legal and strategic business advice, training, and communications/public relations assistance for national and multinational companies, including those in the Fortune 100 and those with more than 100,000 employees.

Her experience also includes working with clients on sophisticated electronic discovery issues, including preparing for and responding to litigation and government investigations. She has advised and represented companies in a wide variety of compliance matters, including the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA), the UK Bribery Act, sanctions and export controls regimes, and the False Claims Act, both in developing and enhancing compliance programs and in responding to government inquiries and investigations. She has also represented telecommunications institutions, government contractors, healthcare providers, life sciences, financial and banking institutions in litigation and investigations involving fraud and compliance issues. She further works with clients in the U.S. national security and intelligence community, as well advising on ethics requirements, background investigations, conflicts of interest and financial disclosures.

DLA Piper LLP (US)’s nationwide practice is led by Jonathan King in Chicago and the FCPA-focused John Hillebrecht in New York. Hillebrecht represented NASDAQ-listed technology firm Net1 UEPS in an SEC and DOJ FCPA investigation, and parallel South African criminal investigation, into allegations of bribery. A longstanding client, GlaxoSmithKline engages the firm on global government and internal investigation matters, on which Washington DC’s Laura Terrell takes the lead.   • Sentencing guidelines for corporate manslaughter

    In February 2010 the Sentencing Guidelines Council (the SGC) issued definitive guidelines to courts on imposing appropriate sentences for corporate manslaughter and health and safety offences causing death. The SGC states that fines imposed on companies found guilty of corporate manslaughter should not fall below £500,000, while fines in respect of health and safety offences that are a significant cause of death should be at least £100,000. Crucially, the SGC declined to provide for a fixed link between the imposed fine and the turnover or profitability of the offending company.
