Career

Stasia Kelly has extensive experience as both outside counsel and as a general counsel and brings these perspectives to her practice, working closely with boards of directors, general counsel and in-house legal teams, helping clients design and implement effective governance and compliance programs. Stasia also advises boards and executives on crisis management.

Stasia is the Managing Partner (Americas) of DLA Piper and co-chairs the Global Governance and Compliance practice.  She is also a member of the firm’s Global Board and Executive Committee.

Firmly committed to helping advance women at DLA Piper, Stasia is a mentor to a number of the women lawyers and is on the leadership committee of the firm's Leadership Alliance for Women (LAW), which is committed to the hiring, development and advancement of women lawyers.

Stasia sits on the board of directors of two public companies. At Owens-Illinois, the world's largest manufacturer of glass packaging, she chairs the Governance and Nominating Committee and is a member of the Risk Committee. At Huntington-Ingalls Industries, which designs, builds and maintains nuclear and non-nuclear ships for the US Navy and Coast Guard, Stasia chairs the Governance and Policy Committee and is a member of the Compensation Committee.

DLA Piper LLP (US) has an active issuer-side practice, which routinely advises clients across a broad range of industry sectors, including technology, mining and natural resources, retail and life sciences. New York’s Jamie Knox heads the debt capital markets practice and supported Everi Holdings on its $375m offering of senior unsecured notes. He and Washington DC-based Stasia Kelly advised US Steel on a $750m senior notes offering. Christopher Paci, also based in New York, chairs the wider capital markets practice.

  • Sentencing guidelines for corporate manslaughter

    In February 2010 the Sentencing Guidelines Council (the SGC) issued definitive guidelines to courts on imposing appropriate sentences for corporate manslaughter and health and safety offences causing death. The SGC states that fines imposed on companies found guilty of corporate manslaughter should not fall below £500,000, while fines in respect of health and safety offences that are a significant cause of death should be at least £100,000. Crucially, the SGC declined to provide for a fixed link between the imposed fine and the turnover or profitability of the offending company.
