Ryan Vann is a practical business-focused employment lawyer assisting employers with labor and employment counseling, litigation, and complex transactional needs. He helps guide employers through all phases of the employment cycle, including hiring considerations, restrictive covenants, disciplinary advice, leave management, employment separation and enforcement of restrictive covenant obligations. Ryan has substantial experience in both large scale and routine reductions in force, including statistical adverse impact analysis, WARN Act evaluation and determination of decisional units for ADEA and OWBPA compliance. He also has led several misconduct investigations of high level executives and guides employers through day-to-day issues and emergency situations.

Ryan also litigates on behalf of employers of all sizes. He has litigated through verdict issues under the FLSA and other state law pay disputes and has obtained summary judgment or reached favorable settlements in numerous state and federal discrimination cases. He has guided employers through dozens of agency charges before the EEOC and DOL.

Ryan has extensive traditional labor law experience, representing clients in NLRB unfair labor practice proceedings, contractual arbitrations, representation proceedings and labor negotiations; advising clients during union organizing campaigns; strike contingency planning; and providing day-to-day labor relations advice arising from mergers, acquisitions and other strategic alliances.

DLA Piper LLP (US) has an 'outstanding practice across the board', and is known to cover the full range of labor and employment disputes for clients from the financial services, advertising, fashion, and healthcare sectors, among others. Brian Kaplan heads the department and is considered an 'extraordinary lawyer'. He was part of a team that successfully defended New York University in multiple lawsuits and charges in excess of $50m against a former adjunct instructor relating to alleged discrimination. Joseph Piesco represents Fox in several disputes, each alleging race discrimination. Piesco and Norman Leon also reached a favorable judgment for Domino's after employees of numerous franchisees tried to hold the client liable as a 'joint employer'.   • Sentencing guidelines for corporate manslaughter

    In February 2010 the Sentencing Guidelines Council (the SGC) issued definitive guidelines to courts on imposing appropriate sentences for corporate manslaughter and health and safety offences causing death. The SGC states that fines imposed on companies found guilty of corporate manslaughter should not fall below £500,000, while fines in respect of health and safety offences that are a significant cause of death should be at least £100,000. Crucially, the SGC declined to provide for a fixed link between the imposed fine and the turnover or profitability of the offending company.
