Under the leadership of John Forrest, DLA Piper‘s growing trade team has extensive expertise in export control, sanctions and customs and WTO work. In 2021, the firm was one of the few to be appointed to the UK government’s new trade law panel, and will be advising the government on both WTO disputes and trade negotiations. Paul Hardy is the firm’s dedicated Brexit expert, and has been working with businesses, public sector bodies and States to influence UK-EU partnership negotiations and utilise existing EU trade deals. Beyond partner level, Chloe Barker was promoted to legal director in May 2020 and advises foreign governments on negotiations with the European Union.

In addition to acting for clients in investor-state disputes, DLA Piper‘s London team advises states and companies on Brexit-related matters, which are led by Paul Hardy. Other notable drivers of work include maritime boundary disputes, immunity issues and treaty matters. The group houses practitioners such as investment treaty expert Kate Cervantes-Knox and John Forrest, who is knowledgeable about export controls, sanctions and international trade law. Senior consultant Scott Horton is another key individual, as is of counsel Ben Sanderson, who splits his time between the London and Madrid offices. Legal director Elinor Thomas is also recommended.

DLA Piper advises on all aspects of international trade law and has extensive experience and knowledge of customs and excise matters. The team is led by John Forrest, who is an international trade and customs specialist, while Richard Woolich heads up the UK tax practice and has particular expertise in UK and cross-border VAT issues. Paul Hardy leads the work involving Brexit and has a background working in the European Commission in Brussels. Legal director Chloe Barker is also noted and advises clients on trade compliance issues, in particular compliance with EU and UK customs requirements, sanctions and export control restrictions.
